Information about Lily
My interests mainly lay with the humanities, having studied Classics and English at Oxford, and History, English and Latin for A-Level at school. I can help with any issues that a student (GCSE, A-Level, or alternative) may be facing in these subjects - like poetry analysis, or timed essay writing for exams - since I have honed specific methods over the years in order to score the highest marks.
Having gone through and succeeded in the Oxford admissions process, I am well placed to advise students on their applications to Oxbridge for English and/or Classics, including preparation for the entrance exams and interviews. From my own experience of applying, I understand that being invited to interview can seem daunting. No fear - I can help here. I have spent the past three years engaging in one-on-one tutorials with Oxford academics: the very people who will be asking the questions in the admissions interviews. I can coach students to become ready to impress the tutors during these short but crucial interviews. Additionally, I also pride myself on my ability to construct gleaming personal statements. Contact me early on so that we can work together throughout the entire process - from drafting the UCAS personal statement all the way up to the interviews.
Looking back further into my academic past, my GCSE grades were: 4A*s, 4As and 2Bs. The A*s were in History, English Literature, English Language and Religious Studies. Looking forward to my academic future, in September I will begin my postgraduate studies in Comparative Literature at King`s College London. In the meantime, I am tutoring and trying to write a novel!
Aside from my work and academics, I am friendly and compassionate. I am always willing to work through any problems that may arise and help to achieve the personal goals of my students. My ultimate aim is to instil a sense of confidence in every student I teach, in the same way that teachers at school, and academics at university, have instilled confidence in me.
Availability: Please contact me to discuss times. Come September, I will be London based and available to teach in-person.
Willing to travel: 50 miles
Experience: I have been tutoring since even before I left sixth form in 2016. My experience:
Student Mentor, IntoUniversity (October 2019 - July 2020)
I mentored a Year 6 pupil in three areas: academic, social and future plans.
I would visit the IntoUniversity centre in east Oxford to support my mentee during fortnightly meetings with the aim of building self-confidence.
English as an additional language volunteer tutor, Jacari Oxford (October 2019 - June 2020)
I taught complete beginners English to a young Brazilian emigrant who had recently moved with her family to East Oxford.
I would travel across the city to teach at the students home once a week.
English GCSE Volunteer Tutor with Schools+, Oxford Hub (October 2018 - July 2019)
I voluntarily tutored small groups of GCSE English students at an underperforming schools in east Oxford on a weekly basis.
I helped students to improve revision tactics for exams with an aim of fostering enthusiasm for this key subject.
Home-visiting English tutor (September 2016 June 2017)
I held 1-1 weekly sessions with three individual GCSE students catering to their different academic needs. Together, we worked towards specific goals and target grades for upcoming GCSE examinations.
I also helped to academically support a dyslexic primary school student who needed a confidence boost ready for the SAT exams.
Primary School Latin Club (September 2014 - June 2015)
I set up and ran an after-school Latin club for children at a local primary school
