Information about Lisa

Qualifying in 2006 with QTS in Secondary English (University of Leeds) I have taught English across KS3-5 for 12 years, and currently teach GCSE and Functional Skills English to post-16 learners in Leeds.

Following the arrival of my children (both still of pre-school age) I left full time work, and have since worked in both FE and HE, expanding my skill base considerably.

In addition to traditional classroom based practice, I have also worked extensively with both adults and young people in community settings, and have developed a range of enjoyable, creative approaches to developing literacy skills with my learners.

I have a very positive and encouraging approach with my learners, and I understand from experience that often progress is most forthcoming with the development of self confidence alongside subject-specific skills.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: Prior to my current FE teaching role, I worked for eight years in a high-performing Leeds academy, both as an English teacher and Literacy Progress Leader, with responsibility for whole-school literacy. As such, I have expertise in addressing a range of barriers to literacy development.

My current teaching role requires me to engage with learners who have struggled to make progress in traditional settings. I enjoy adapting my approach to make learning accessible to diverse learners, and find success in these cases extremely gratifying.

At the other end of the spectrum, my previous role in HE enabled me to work with undergraduate level students, assisting with both assignment content and issues concerning academic literacy.

Lisa has been tutoring my son for approximately 6 weeks to help prepare him for GCSE English. Her approach is fantastic and Lisa is really committed and enthusiastic. Lisa always asks my son how he is and takes time with him and is patient . I always ask him after each session how he found it and he always says he’s enjoyed it and found it really helpful. Lisa has also noticed an improvement as has his English teacher. My son does have autism which we made Lisa aware of but she was still so keen to support him and the relationship they have is really good and it can take a lot for him to build and develop a relationship. I do believe that Lisa works with the child and does not have the attitude that ‘one size fits all’. She will work out and adapt her teaching to suit. Hope this review is helpful.
