Information about Tommaso

Hi, I am Tommaso,

I am a final year PhD student in particle physics at Durham University and Queen Mary University of London.

My PhD project deals with theoretical and experimental aspects of particle physics, specifically focusing on ubiquitous yet elusive particles called neutrinos. My typical day consists of a lot of coding, translating hard and difficult problems into computer-digestible chunks, and crunching a lot of numbers hoping to get closer to new discoveries. More than often, I also seek help from my colleagues and I have to explain to them what I am after in the simplest terms, in order to be as efficient as possible.

I am from Italy and I graduated with honours from my hometown university, the Università degli Studi di Padova. I love cooking and baking and listening to music.

Availability: Thanks to my career, I am highly knowledgeable in maths and physics, and I am also proficient in coding languages (C++, python, SQL). I can offer help with any of these subjects at all levels, to prepare for exams, complete your homework, or just iron out some doubts.
Contact me so that we can find a suitable schedule for both us. We can also discuss your needs, so I can tailor the best strategy to help you learn.

Willing to travel: 2 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring high school and university students in maths and physics ever since I started my higher education. Along my academic path, I learnt how to communicate efficiently not only to my peers, but also to the wider public. Besides private tutoring, I have taken part in numerous outreach projects in which I had to explain advanced topics such as particle physics to young school kids. On top of that, I have also tutored MSc students of the Imperial College Business School in python 3 and SQL.

Despite some common misconceptions, maths and physics are fascinating and enjoyable subjects!
In my experience, the most effective way of learning or understanding something is by putting it into practice. When tutoring, I give a lot of importance to applications and examples, and I always try to find down-to-earth explanations, so that even the hardest concept can be broken down into easier principles and digested faster. It is my firm belief that anyone is capable of understanding these subjects, given the time and a good teacher. I like to make teaching captivating by sharing facts and particularities which are typically not found in books.
