I am calm, reliable and punctual and have a passion for English. I have a friendly approach but do expect my students to apply themselves and complete any homework I set them. My marking is detailed and thorough: targets for improvement are always set but I also praise what went well. I believe that if students feel confident in their strengths, it will encourage them to work on areas of weakness.

I`ve been delighted with the progress my students have made over the last year, particularly in their ability to address questions directly, which greatly benefits their essay writing. I have also seen several students make significant progress in their assessments, due to the one to one preparation lessons I ran for them.

To begin with, I`d suggest a meeting with the student to discuss what they need help with, then we can draw up a programme of study. This could be focussed on a particular topic (Shakespeare/drama/poetry/novels/articles) or specific writing skills such as creative or persuasive writing, analytical paragraphs, or analysing writers` use of language and structure.

Experience: I am a qualified teacher of English. I hold a degree (first class) in English and an MA in Renaissance Studies. Prior to retraining as an English teacher, I worked for over twenty-five years in book publishing, designing books, commissioning creatives, as well as writing two books myself and numerous articles for magazines.
