Information about Amanda
I am an enthusiastic, passionate and friendly tutor of all things English! I like to engage my students and support them through an enjoyable, positive, learning experience. I am keen to motivate my students and give each one the self belief required to achieve their goal.
I recognise that no two students are the same, and therefore I make a tailor made plan of work for each student-mindful of any limitations/expectations or individual differences. These include but not limited to students with dyslexia, ADHD/Autism, slow processing disorders and those for whom GCSE`s cause overwhelming anxiety.I have worked extensively in school and online with students who have special educational needs.
My teaching experience has been gained in multiple different environments. These have included a mosque, a public school, language schools, state schools and a sixth form college, where I currently work as an English intervention mentor. This predominantly includes the process of resitting exams. I specifically work with those who have narrowly missed a grade 4. I believe that raising standards of literacy is key to success, especially for any students who have some gaps following the Covid outbreak.
It can feel demoralizing to fail a GCSE. However, it can often be just a few tweaks here and there that can make all the difference, after all, 1-1 has been proved to enhance a student`s performance as oppose to being than being in a class of 30. Furthermore, many students can be unclear about what specific questions demand as a response, so these are skills that I focus on with students by scaffolding and showing model responses. This often has the effect of reducing anxiety amongst students who have been unclear about his.
I have experience of multiple exam boards and the expectations of these. I also teach Functional Skills. Rather than this being seen as inferior to GCSE, it actually has a value for those who work better with real life and who need to study skills that will be used in real life. It is also recognised that a Level 2 equates to a Grade 4 pass at GCSE, and the qualification is being widely accepted to get into further education or an apprenticeship..
It is also imperative that students are very clear about the differences between English Language and English Literature. Many students come to me having never seen a paper or knowing what is academically tested within both disciplines. They demand different things, but it is key to those taking Literature that they understand how much work is involved in remembering quotes for example.
It is also essential that particular attention be paid to the context of English texts. This is a vital component of the GCSE English Literature program and can help students to understand how and where texts fit in with historical periods or modes of thinking. This can open up a whole new world provoking questioning and further thinking about the purpose of the variety of narratives.
Writing for purpose is explored within the GCSE qualification- these skills are transferable to other subjects and help students to think about the many ways of changing how and what we write in order to persuade people to our way of thinking. Writing a personal statement or an email of complaint-or writing a ground breaking speech, or a front page tabloid-I will show you how!
The art of creative writing can enable students to expand their imaginations (incase we have any budding Jane Austens or JK Rowlings!).This is also key feature of the English Language GCSE. I also believe that any reading is never a waste. It will help your son/daughter to build their vocabulary, and will draw a students attention to the variety of purposes of writing that they need to become familiar with.
I am also a fully qualified EFL teacher. I can open up a world of opportunities to non English speaking students. These could range from helping students to study here in the UK or indeed for those who have moved to the UK for work.
I have had been fortunate enough to have had a consistently high pass rate year on year -and I never cease to be amazed at what can be achieved by students who may present as really low level initially. The confidence that comes from one to one tuition is really very significant -there is nothing better than a student thrilled with good results! Or for those who are already high achieving, but who have been pushed a little harder to further improve grades.
Please contact me to secure a place for yourself or your child. With hard work and commitment this will hopefully lead to much deserved success !
I am willing to teach more local students in person at my house. I am happy to offer group sessions too.
