Information about Benjamin

I have an MSci in Physics from Imperial College London (first class with honours). British-born Chinese and speak fluent conversational Mandarin. I study singing and languages in my spare time. I worked in software development for a number of years and am currently working as an actor.

I have a calm approach to problem solving and will endeavour to ensure that the student has a good understanding. My style of tutoring is to focus on doing exercises, especially exercises that the tutee finds difficult or is otherwise unsure of. I like to explain topics as and when they become relevant in the context of an exercise we are working on. Learning the theory in applied contexts.

To get the most out of my tutoring sessions - in your classes and homework, please make notes (mental or otherwise) on what you find difficult so that we can go through them in our sessions.

I will also add that specifically for maths (which is also a large part of physics) the key is practice - even if you understand the concepts and relationships, it doesn’t mean your application is flawless in practice. If we are following a typical schedule of 1 hour a week with me, I would say that alone is not enough time to get the practice you need. Our sessions will be focused on difficult problems, understanding, as well as application, so you will need to put in more hours outside of our sessions to make sure you get enough practice. Tutoring sessions at 1 hour a week are a strong aid but unfortunately not a substitute for independent practice. Something important to bear in mind!

After each lesson I make notes on what was covered, what the student would like to cover next lesson, and any weaknesses I noticed. I address the weaknesses from previous lessons at the start of each lesson until they are eliminated.

Availability: Evenings & weekends are best - when I have auditions they are typically in London during the day.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have tutored for friends of friends, and at university there were problem sheet sessions after lectures where the older students assisted the younger students. I have been in both roles :)

Benjamin helps my daughter with GCSE Maths. He has really helped her to understand the subject through his patience and knowledge and her confidence and ability has improved as a result. I would highly recommend Benjamin as a Maths tutor.
