Prizewinning Oxford PhD graduate with extensive and highly successful tutoring experience.
Literature is my passion, as is teaching. Close reading is one of my greatest strengths: I can see, and help students see, what is at work in a text. This fosters passion and interest in my students; at an examination level, it translates into successful grades. I came first in the year, each year, at university I can help any student to excel, too.
I am fluent in English and French, and research and publish on both. I am happy to teach both language and literature. Specialist in resits and intensive courses.
I have demonstrable experience (and testimonials) in raising exam performance: my last student improved from C-B to A* at A-Level English Literature in a matter of months - indeed, he ultimately came first in the country in A-Level English Literature. I have also had great success helping students gain entry to a variety of well-known prep and senior schools; my tutees have won many scholarships (Magdalen English scholarship; Eton King`s scholarship in English).
Over many years, I have refined a supportive, informed, and question-based teaching style that brings out the best in my students while providing the highest quality of support and creative and intellectual input.
I can help with any age, having taught students from primary age to university level. Please let me know your goals and I will shape an education to suit them.
Availability: I am available every day (morning till evening), and can work in Oxford or London.

Colin is an amazing tutor! He helped me improve my IELTS score by 0.5 overall and 1.0 in modules in time for my University. He took it as urgent request and dedicated a lot of time working early mornings and other times many would not find convenient. Colin tutored me throughout my English A-level, and without him I highly doubt I would have been able to achieve my A* or my place at Oxbridge. His teaching transformed my approach to both reading and writing about texts, encouraging me to think independently and write much less formulaically. Not only did he help my writing exponentially improve, but his support massively helped me grow in confidence; he is a very kind, supportive, and encouraging teacher, who always made sure I would never feel judged or ‘wrong’ in our lessons. This meant I was able to engage in the subject without feeling self-conscious or anxious (as one often does), and I began to enjoy it much more! The lesson structure was completely tailored to my individual needs; by the time my exams drew near we mainly close-read essays I had written as Colin gave feedback and suggestions. The thoroughness and quality of this feedback – and its impact on my writing – cannot be overstated; it is beyond any quality of teaching I have otherwise experienced. Colin’s passion for English is infectious; my lessons became the highlight of my week, and I missed them once my exams had finished! I cannot recommend Colin highly enough – he is the best teacher I have ever had.
