Information about Artour

I am a professional Japanese language educator and a social scientist. I have 25 years of experience teaching all levels of Japanese for GCSE`s, IB, A Levels, JLPT, university courses, and adult learners. I mentor graduate and postgraduate students in Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities to help them successfully complete their university coursework be it essay, dissertations, individual research projects, reaction papers, literature reviews, core chapters, research proposals, etc. I also prepare students for exams to ensure the highest possible results.

I have worked as an academic and pastoral mentor at my university for over 5 years and 8 years as a private Social Sciences tutor. During that time, I have successfully helped students with hundreds of written assignments for all faculties across Social Sciences, History, Arts, and Humanities at the UK universities, including but not limited to:

Anthropology and subdisciplines
Sociology and subdisciplines
Japanese language
Political Science
Cultural Studies
International Relations
Law and Legal Studies
Religious Studies
Media and Communication Studies
Migration Studies
Gender Studies
Area Studies
Art History.

I usually pick up from where the lecturer/supervisor failed the student and help them finish successfully their coursework such as:

book and article reviews and précis,
reaction papers,
research proposals,
core chapters,
literature reviews,
individual research projects, etc.

I also coach for Academic Study Skills such as

academic writing,
working out research questions and research methodology,
finding research sources for your assignments and and referencing them correctly,
theoretical approaches,
planning and structuring written assignments,
referencing, paraphrasing, and avoiding plagiarism
best reading and note-taking practices,
developing critical thinking,
structuring academic argument,
exam techniques,
workload and time management,
and mental and emotional health maintenance.

With particular reference to Japanese language learning, I help with planning and structuring one`s learning process, kanji and vocabulary memorisation techniques, making sense of Japanese grammar and usage, developing writing and conversational skills. I can explain the minutest nuances of Japanese grammar in plain English and ensure that you know how to use it correctly. Specifically for teaching kanji, I use my own method adapted from the Japanese national school curriculum for the needs of non-native speakers. It is built around continuously mindmapping kanji and their combinations to help students develop kanji usage, boost vocabulary, and understand how the Japanese language describes reality.

Utilising my international corporate and academic experience, I provide life-coaching advice on career and academic development. I have been through five different education systems myself and I am very attuned to the difficulties international students may have with dealing with the UK higher education. I provide tailor-made assistance for each individual students suiting their educational and cultural background.

I studied at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies on the Japanese Ministry of Education scholarship and have a university degree in teaching Japanese, Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), and the JETRO Business Japanese certificate. I finished my MA and am completing my PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where I attended 24 courses in Social Sciences, History, Arts, Humanities, and Languages of East and Southeast Asia.

Professional Memberships:

I also work at the JLPT exam in London. I am a member of the SOAS Japan Research Centre, the British Association of Japanese Teachers, the European Association of Social Anthropologists, the International Association for Asian Studies, the British Association for Japanese Studies, the British Association of MEXT Scholars, and the Japan Society of the UK.

I help with Japanese school or university coursework or provide full-on individual preparation for Edexcel Japanese exam as an external student. I also teach adults for business and hobby purposes.

Cross-Cultural Training:

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have worked for a number of Japanese multinationals and SMEs around the world. Using that experience as a Certified Cross-Cultural Trainer I provide executive coaching and give interactive workshops on doing business with Japanese companies: the do`s and don`ts, how to gain and maintain trust, keigo (honorific speech), Japanese business etiquette and correspondence, etc. Building on my academic training as a social scientist of Japan and my 30 years of involvement with the country, I also give interactive media-enhanced talks on various aspects of Japanese culture, art, and society.

Translation and Interpreting:

I have been involved in specialist translation and interpreting projects from and into Japanese, having worked with the likes of Toyota Motors, the NHK, Ricoh, and Cendant Moblity.

Polyglot Credentials:

Being a huge language buff and thanks to the international life I have lived, I have a written and conversational command of Chinese, Thai, Laotian, Russian, Croatian, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Spanish, and a few other languages. I make a habit out of picking up the fundamentals of the language when I go on my extended trips to various countries. "After the sixth language it`s a cinch."

I can`t say enough positive things about Artour. My son has been working with him for about 6 months now learning Japanese and his growth has been fantastic. Artour is very professional and knows how to challenge him, but always with humor and kindness. He always looks forward to his lessons and I highly recommend Artour!

Before our tutorial, I was totally confused and didnt know how to manage my dissertation and fullfill my supervisors expectations but, Artour explained me everything very clearly, told the logic of dissertation and how to structure it. At the same time he was very encouraging and gave me confidence. Strongly reccommended.

Artour is teaching myself and my husband Japanese from scratch prior to a trip to the Rugby World Cup. Bearing in mind we are both in our 60’s, he has a task on his hands! Japanese is not easy to learn but Artour is a fantastic tutor- always full of enthusiasm, energy and encouragement. He has a very broad knowledge of Japan and Japanese and therefore can intersperse grammar and vocabulary with history, geography, culture and restaurant recommendations! We highly recommend him as a tutor.

Tutors Response :

Many thanks, Aileen, for your kind words. It is my joy to teach you and Russell Japanese. Hope you will have a whale of time in Japan with your newly acquired conversational skills.

Artour is a brilliant tutor: enthusiastic, dedicated and very knowledgeable. I have worked with him for just over a year, on a personalised study programme designed by Artour to help me meet my goals. In that time, I have achieved even more than I thought possible, including being promoted sooner than expected within my company. They were impressed by my professional development as a result of my studies with Artour. Working with him has not only helped me to achieve my immediate goals, it`s also helped me develop the skills and focus for long-term success. Artour`s guidance and support has been invaluable, and I wouldn`t hesitate to highly recommend his skills as a tutor.

I have been taking weekly beginner Japanese lessons with Artour for a few months now, and have thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them.

Artour is both a professional and friendly tutor, keen on answering every question you have and very encouraging when you hit any roadblocks in your learning.

His enthusiasm for the Japanese language and culture definitely rubs off on you. On top of teaching grammar, vocabulary and kanji, he also shares bits and pieces of Japanese customs and traditions, manners and etiquette, throughout the lesson – all of which are essential in assimilating into the culture.

Artour also tailors his teaching to suit you. If he sees that you are struggling in a certain area, he supports you to focus on that, and gives you studying tips and extra materials that will help you improve in your self-studying at home.

I recommend him very highly and am looking forward to having more lessons with him!

Tutors Response :

Thank you for the kind words, Ildyko. It is a joy to have you as a student too. Looking forward to watch you make even more headway with your Japanese.

My husband and I had weekly Japanese lessons from Artour for a few months before our move to Tokyo. Artour was a professional and fantastic tutor. Japanese is known to be notoriously difficult but Artour’s lessons gave us a great foundation in Japanese.

As we only had a few months, Artour was open to structuring the lessons and covering content that we would find most useful. His lessons and the materials he put together from different resources demonstrated that he understood our learning needs. Having tailored lessons for our learning objectives was what we valued the most about our lessons.

As complete beginners, we found Artour’s guidance as an experienced tutor on what to cover and in what order really useful. Our objective was to have a base in Japanese. In a few months we had achieved this and were pleased with the progress we had made. We were able to pronounce, read and write the Japanese syllabaries (hiragana and katakana), had covered the basics of Japanese grammar and had an introduction to learning kanji.

A big bonus was also discussing Japanese culture with Artour giving us tips and explaining nuances, which we found really useful.

Artour gave us tips on self-studying. With his support we were able to focus on what we should learn before the next lesson. The lessons were then great for clarifying anything we hadn’t understood ourselves and getting Artour’s feedback before moving to the following week’s content.

Artour was well-prepared, communicated clearly, was approachable and answered any questions we had. Artour was easy to contact and responsive. He was accommodating when it came to scheduling lessons at a time that worked for us.

In our final lesson, Artour advised us on what to cover next as we continued to self-study Japanese.

We would highly recommend Artour as a tutor for Japanese but also for other subjects due to his excellent professional, but friendly, manner and methods as a tutor.

Artour has been teaching me Japanese at a beginner level, and has already been a huge help in keeping me moving forward.

He can teach in the style that best suits you. He can teach from a detailed grammatical approach or a more simplified natural approach. He can leave you to progress at your own pace, or push you to do your best if you think that`s what you need.

His lessons are very flexible and he is always ready to answer all of my questions. I recommend him very highly.
