Information about Ian

I enjoy language teaching and learning. My first teaching language is French, having studied it to A level and then as part of my degree which included a year in France working as a language assistant in a lycée in the Var department in Provence. I then learnt Spanish during my teaching career, through attending courses in Spain and enrolling in Spanish schools in Guatemala, Ecuador and El Salvador on career breaks. I took A level Spanish as a mature student in 2013 and got an A. Since retiring I have begun learning Italian using online resources and independent study. I have other interests such as sport, especially tennis, travel and film. I have lived in Beckenham for over 20 years.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I`m an experienced Secondary School Languages teacher, recently retired. I began teaching in 1992 and retired in 2024. Allowing for career breaks I have over 28 years of full time classroom teaching experience. I have taught French across the entire Secondary age and ability range in a number of schools including 2 different schools for over 10 years each. I took a couple of career breaks to travel and learn Spanish as it became more popular in school. I have taught French up to A level and Spanish to GCSE. For more than 10 years I worked as a GCSE examiner for AQA French in Writing and then Speaking. At Foundation level GCSE I can help you get to a 4 or 5 if your are presently below that. If you are Higher level I can help you boost your grade to a 7, 8 or 9. If you are presently year 10 or below you will be taking the new GCSE exam in June 2026 and I have created resources to help students prepare for this. I can also help learners in KS3 and A level. At all levels I would aim to make lessons confidence boosting with opportunities to practise, consolidate and extend language.
