Information about Michael
I am a relaxed, ambitious and very well informed teacher who has featured as an "inspiring teacher" in an article of the TES magazine (10 March 2017).
I recently took early retirement from a long career teaching English Literature and Language to a wide range of pupils at a well known independent school. I have always enjoyed passing on my love of the subject to students and I am enjoying continuing to do so. I particularly enjoy teaching A Levjel Literature and I have extensive experience of teaching a variety of exam boards. While working, I studied for, and achieved, an MA in Literature with the Open University, specialising in modernist novels for my dissertation.
I also enjoy teaching GCSE Literature as I have always had great success teaching Years 10 and 11, forming a productive rapport with pupils of all abilities.
I enjoy all sports, especially golf, tennis and football and I also love travelling.
Availability: I am pretty much available at any time to come to a students home, depending on the convenience and preference of the student.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I have taught English for 30 years. I was the Oxbridge mentor at school and have taught many different exam boards for A Level Literature and GCSE Language and Literature. I was in charge of Year 9, coordinating the curriculum and managing a sizeable team of teachers. I set all the entrance exams and was responsible for the CE marking process.
As a Sixth Form tutor for many years, I have written hundreds of UCAS references and being a key part of the university application process was very rewarding.
My school is well known for its sporting successes and, during my time there, I enjoyed coaching many football teams as well as tennis and badminton.
DBS Check: Yes

Michael has been tutoring our son for several months in preparation for GCSE. He is friendly, calm, very reliable and knowledgeable about all the relevant literature, having taught the works himself for many years. Both we and our son can see the progress being made. We are very happy to recommend him.
