Information about Grant
Im a 36 year old graduate in Ancient History from The University of Manchester. My specialty is organising skills and Roman History.
Availability: Im available throughout the week, from 8am up to 9pm. In addition, Im happy to work on weekend too.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I believe I found my forte in teaching when I personally experienced academic anxiety at university and began a quest to understand why I had anxiety, and how I could overcome it. I discovered the works of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and his book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. In it, he argued that if you face a challenge with little to no skill set, our mental state would be one of perpetual anxiety. However, if one builds up their skill set, anxiety would disappear and one would move closer to a state of mind called flow. I began creating a skill set that led to me getting extremely well-organised with all of my research, readings and writing drafts.
Please dont feel you cant contact me if you dont have any academic anxiety. Ive worked with Masters students who had managed quite well but were not particularly well-organised. Ive helped them to refine those skills and in some cases Ive given them ideas for ways of getting organised. Feel free to contact me if you think you need help in better organising your academic study.
One final thing I should mention: Once you have a solid skill set, it helps you become focussed on tasks, both short-term and long-term. Reading and understanding arguments becomes much easier and when it comes to writing essays, you understand what position you are arguing for because you know the source material.
In addition to all of the above, I teach Roman history. I can familiarise you with you all of the ancient sources and the best secondary sources. Experience the Roman world through letter writers like Cicero, the war commentaries of Julius Caesar and the natural world writings of Lucretius and Pliny the Elder.
I can introduce you to the military side and how the Romans fought pitched battles how the Romans thought about politics and the distress of the Roman Revolution and how and why it happened. We also cover the role of women in the Roman World and how the Romans thought about religion and gods.
Thank you for reading. Good luck with your studies.
