Information about Ed
Im Ed, an engineer with a background in computational modelling and simulation. I hold a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester and an MPhil in Scientific Computing from the University of Cambridge, where I specialised in numerical algorithms for modelling fluid flow. I previously worked at Rolls-Royce, developing and validating software used to predict turbine and rotor physics.
I have nearly five years experience tutoring GCSE and A-level content, supporting students at different stages of their learning. I work with learners who need to build confidence and secure foundations, as well as those aiming for top grades and competitive university courses. Alongside tutoring, I have formal classroom training in mathematics.
I am now extending my tuition to support with GCSE Computer Science.
Availability: Please reach out to discuss specific availability. Generally, I am available on weekday evenings or weekends.
Please note that a standard session is 50 minutes, so if it runs over it will not encroach on other bookings.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I first started tutoring online during the pandemic. I quickly developed a passion for teaching and it has become an integral part of my life ever since. Over the past four and a half years, I have delivered more than 2000 online lessons. I have also spent a term visiting a state comprehensive school as a maths teacher.
My tutoring style focuses on developing independence and clear mathematical thinking. I encourage students to explain their reasoning and methods, so that understanding is secure rather than superficial. Instead of simply providing answers, I generally use targeted prompts and questions to help students navigate their own way to solutions.
For students with higher prior attainment, I often encourage them to bring their own questions or topics to sessions, aimed at areas they find challenging. This makes lessons more focused and productive, improves engagement, and helps foster the independent study and revision skills needed for exam success.
My specialism is in applied mathematics and classical physics. Specific areas include algebra, calculus, mechanics, thermodynamics and numerical methods.
