Information about Maria

Masters of Performance in the Orchestral Training of the Oboe in association with the LSO at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

My teaching is about the enjoyment of the experience of the music journey and I look forward to motivate you to share this music experience and love for the oboe and the recorder! Bear in mind what Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher said: ‘Without music, life would be a mistake’!

Availability: I have a very flexible schedule and I can offer lessons during daytime and evenings, weekdays and weekends.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: During my Masters of Performance at the Guildhall School I have focused on the oboe and winds pedagogy and especially on the orchestral coaching and preparation of young wind players: these three years I have been working with the London Symphony Orchestra Discovery on various projects in which I was coaching young wind students (ages 8-18) and wind ensembles and preparing them for their orchestral concerts with the LSO.

The invaluable experience I had in these projects, in combination with other projects of music interactive performances in schools in East London and my long experience in this area in Greece (I was the Oboe Professor at the State Music School in Thessaloniki for 2 years (2010-12)) made me decide that I positively wish to work on and develop even further my teaching and performing skills in order to be able to inspire youngsters musically and initiate them into the universal, infinite and magical world of music.

The teaching methods which I apply in these projects and in my private teaching have resulted from a deep research around oboe and winds pedagogy, based upon bibliography of educational, sociological and psychological theories and using different learning styles for creating a more interesting and inspiring instrumental teaching which focuses on:

• Engaging the young wind players with the orchestral repertoire using various learning styles like kinaesthetic learning, experiential learning, visual learning, auditory learning and by connecting them with other forms of art.
• Enhancing their stage presence and confidence in an orchestral concert and preparing them on how to perform on stage and deliver messages/communicate with the audience using vicarious learning, group learning and experiential learning
• Motivating them to love and enjoy playing their instruments and their music.
