Information about Kerry

I am currently studying Medicine at University College London. I have a great passion for education and learning, and a particular enthusiasm for science education. I have great satisfaction in sharing knowledge and understanding with others, discussing science and mathematics in a variety of ways to stimulate the learning process, and teaching others to develop their own interests. When helping another person to learn I think it’s important to take time to understand how that person studies best or to develop their learning style to help them get the most out of their teaching.

I myself have dyslexia, but by being a conscientious learner I have developed a number of successful strategies to overcome the problems I have faced and help me achieve the highest standards of academic success. I am very aware that different learning styles suit different leaners and of the benefits of sensory learning techniques, such as kinesthetic, visual and auditory techniques. I am eager to use my experience to help others to understand their academic weaknesses and to show them how to manage and overcome them.

Experience: General tutoring experience
At Hills Road Sixth Form College I gave one-to-one tutoring sessions to lower sixth form A-level students in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics on a weekly basis, focused on strengthening a student’s subject knowledge, examination technique and understanding of the specification and as appropriate for the individual tutee. I informally mentored a number of my peers throughout GCSEs.

I have significant experience of teaching, leading and coordinating young people. I have developed excellent communication and interpersonal skills through my experiences of working with young learner in the performing arts, caring for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and by taking on a rich variety of leadership roles. I am able to take on very responsible roles, manage my time effectively and deliver to a high standard.

Experience in the performing arts
• 2001-2012, I have trained in the performing arts with the TheatreTrain Company and performed at several major London theatres, including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane (twice) and The Royal Albert Hall (five times), as well as several local theatres.

• In 2009, I was one of four girls chosen to represent the UK at the European Children’s Theatre Encounter (EDERED) held in Moscow, for a two week event. In 2010, I performed a solo song with TheatreTrain National at the Royal Albert hall to an audience of about 4,000 people.

• In 2008 I represented my school as part of the Young Voices choir at O2 arena, numerous sporting district competitions, out of school conferences, and abroad. I am a keen charity supporter and participated in the Race for Life 2012 to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.
