Information about Matthew

About myself:

I have over 1000 hours` experience of private tutoring for a wide range of exams from GCSE English to university physics. I now specialise in US standardised tests such as the SAT, ACT, and SAT Maths and Physics subject tests, and have experience leading courses at top schools including Harrow, Charterhouse, Southbank, and King’s Canterbury. I also have experience leading courses in maths and physics A-level.

I am currently studying towards a PhD in Nuclear Fusion at Imperial College London, after having obtained a Distinction in my MRes at Imperial, following a First Class MPhys in Theoretical Physics from the University of York.

I`m a firm believer that anyone can solve complex problems if they’re explained in the right way. My passion for the subjects I teach can be seen in my approach to lessons, not simply repeating facts but allowing a deeper understanding and enjoyment of the subject at hand.

Outside of tutoring, I am a keen sportsman, having recently taken up squash as well as playing 6-a-side football on a weekly basis. Most of my free time nowadays is spent training for triathlons.

Tutoring approach:

I like to get properly involved and understand the needs of the tutee first and foremost. I will endeavour to identify which topics need covering and if needs be start from basic principles. I will then use a structured approach to ensure the pupil understands not only how to get from each step but why, answering any questions along the way.

I like to use past papers and work through them with the pupil, as I believe these are a great way to learn how to tackle the problems that will be faced in the actual exam. Each student is different, so I understand the importance of evaluating their strengths and weaknesses to begin with and then focusing on problem areas.

As I have been tutoring for students at the highest level, I understand the pressures on students to achieve high marks, and I will ensure that I do my best to help them achieve them.

Availability: Very flexible - can be available most mornings, afternoons and evenings in the week for those close to Imperial College.
