Information about Sarah
I am a patient, enthusiastic, and creative teacher of English with a broad spectrum of teaching and examining experience behind me.
I hold a First Class Honours degree specialising in Linguistics (particularly functional grammar and the diversity of `world Englishes`), but with an additional focus on children`s literature. After qualifying, I worked in management in the emergency healthcare and then housing sector, where I had training responsibilities for new and developing recruits, including the line management and development of apprentices.
After that, I studied for a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training alongside an English Language and Literacy specialism. This qualifies me to work with students aged 14 and over in both schools and the community. I have used this qualification to teach GCSE English Language and Literature in mainstream school (which, in turn, led on to exam board training and a full season of exam marking for a leading exam board) and also to teach ESOL/EFL and adult functional literacy.
Due to an interest in SEND and additional needs, I undertook much of my training within the LDD (Learning Difficulties and Disabilities) stream of a Further Education college. I was taken on as an employed Tutor before qualifying, and I continue to work for the same institution on a sessional basis. To date, my teaching responsibilities have been varied, including Functional Skills English/Literacy, Maths, and Employability. I have delivered to both adults and young people.
My private tutoring service is mainly geared towards GCSE (including iGCSE) as, following my examiner training, this is my main area of expertise. I can offer you an in-depth knowledge of exam board requirements, and I approach both English subjects from a refreshing and engaging perspective to help students to improve their understanding. I am creative and enthusiastic, and I hope to persuade students to enjoy the subjects more too - I certainly do!
In addition to this, I provide online academic writing tuition to students around the world - the majority university undergraduates, and many of them using English as a second or additional language.
