Information about Alistair

Hi! I`m Alistair .

I`m a Sheffield mathematics tutor who teaches one-to-one maths sessions in the comfort of your own home. I have a fully up-to-date, enhanced CRB / DBS history spanning the last ten years, and have worked in Education since 2009.
I provide private maths tutoring up to GCSE or adult-learner level, and I can work with any ability level within that. From those who are struggling and need some extra help, right through to those who are gifted at mathematics and are hungry for more, I can help!
Whatever the level, I don`t just love teaching mathematics; my biggest love is teaching confidence. Whether that`s the confidence to tackle a new kind of equation, the confidence to start thinking mathematically, or just the confidence to have a go when something feels difficult, I know that true learning doesn`t happen until you feel happy, safe and comfortable enough to take that leap. Small changes in thinking can lead to huge steps in learning, and that`s why confidence is so important.

I`m a numbers fanatic, and I find mathematics to be both beautiful and profoundly inspiring. I was lucky enough to be educated under the Eustace Arden Scholarship at Repton School in Derbyshire, from where I received offers to study Mathematics at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. There`s no place like home though: studying at the University of Sheffield was always going to win for me!

During my time at university I started to wonder about modes of mathematical thinking and how people approach this in different ways. So after finishing my mathematical studies I undertook another undergraduate degree in Education,  Counselling and Psychology, this time at Sheffield Hallam University, where I attained a First Class honours with Distinction. I had realised something: it`s not just the subject you`re learning that matters, but how you learn it, too.
Everyone learns differently, and everyone begins at a different level. Maths is most exciting when it`s taught creatively - and in a way that suits the individual learner. No two students are the same! I`ve worked in Pupil Referral Units, with students who may have struggled in mainstream education, and I`ve worked with those who have additional needs (educational, physical and behavioural). I`ve worked in community schools and in independent private schools, with nursery-age children through to exam-focused teens. Although each student is unique and requires the space to learn in their own way, there is one thing everyone has in common: confidence is everything.
;
;In our sessions we`ll be using a variety of learning methods, from specialist iPad apps to time-tested teaching techniques, all at a level to suit you. We`ll cover everything needed for exam success (if you`re studying for them) AND we`ll be working towards encouraging a natural mathematical fluency that will be yours for life.

Experience: I started working in childcare in 2009, at Secondary and Primary Schools, and Early Years Centres, in Mainstream Education and in Special Schools.

While working in education, I also studied a Level 3 CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education from 2010, achieving an A-Grade, with two 12 week placements: one at Nursery, and one at Primary School across three year groups.

I also studied an Education, Psychology and Counselling degree at University with three more 12-week placements: one at an Independent School, one at a Pupil Referral Unit, and one working with Derbyshire County Council’s Multi Agency Support Team.

While taking a year out from University in 2015, I worked again in Forest Schools with both Early Years and Secondary age children, and tutored groups of children on GCSE Mathematics for the charity Action Tutoring.

I have also raised over £11,000 for the Red Cross training for and performing endurance athletic events like running marathons and climbing mountains.
