Information about Gemma

I am a qualified primary teacher and experienced tutor with a passion for instilling a love of learning in primary school aged children.

I have taught in both KS1 and KS2 and have a sound understanding of age related expectations as well as planning, teaching and assessment. I`m able to differentiate my lessons to meet the needs of the children I`m teaching - planning to a child`s interests to engage them.

I have prepared students for the 7+ and 11+ including for Maths, English and reasoning. I have tutored students who have been awarded Academic Scholarships at Bishop Challoner and St Dunstans - London schools.

Although I am skilled in teaching both Maths and English at primary level, as an English Literature graduate, I really enjoy teaching Literacy at primary level.

I love considering ways to bring books to life to creatively engage children in writing - I always try to teach literacy and grammar skills through children`s texts, rather than stand alone. I love applying this approach, exploring language and ideas in children`s books, as a hook for writing.

Further to my teaching experience, I have worked in creative and management roles within the National Trust. One of these roles involved developing creative family learning programmes which supported reading and writing outcomes for young children at or below expected levels. This included producing an immersive and interactive Jolly Postman installation, a Superworm clue-based trail across a historic house and Very Hungry Caterpillar story bags. I am creative and like to incorporate playfulness into my lessons.

I live in Combe Down and currently work part-time for the National Trust. I am a Mum to two lovely little boys (nearly 2 and 4!) and know how important instilling
