Saravanamuthu Ahilan

I am a PhD-qualified Science educator and an experienced Chemistry teacher and tutor, currently working in a sixth-form college in Harrow and teaching students privately through my own tuition service.

I specialise in Chemistry at GCSE, A-Level and International Baccalaureate (IB) level, including IB MYP and Diploma Programme Chemistry. I also teach GCSE Biology, Physics and Combined Science.

Alongside my academic qualifications, I bring extensive experience of teaching and supporting students in schools, colleges and one-to-one tuition. This enables me to identify gaps in understanding quickly and explain challenging scientific concepts in a clear, structured and accessible way.

My lessons combine strong subject knowledge with exam-focused teaching. I particularly enjoy helping students develop the deeper understanding and problem-solving skills needed to progress from knowing the content to answering higher-level examination questions confidently.

Online lessons are interactive and include digital handwriting, worked calculations, diagrams, PowerPoint resources and carefully selected exam-style questions.

Availability: I am available Monday and Friday daytimes, on other weekdays after 1pm and on weekends.

Willing to travel: 2 miles

Experience: I have around 15 years of classroom teaching experience and approximately 20 years of experience providing private tuition in Science and Chemistry.

I have taught Chemistry and Science across KS3, GCSE, A-Level and International Baccalaureate programmes. My experience includes teaching IB MYP Science and IB Diploma Chemistry, as well as A-Level Chemistry and GCSE Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Combined Science.

I have worked in a range of secondary schools and sixth-form colleges, including St Dominic`s Sixth Form College, St James Catholic High School, Chalfonts Independent Grammar School, City and Islington Sixth Form College and Francis Holland School.

My teaching experience has given me a strong understanding of the difficulties students commonly encounter in Chemistry and Science. I am particularly experienced in identifying gaps in knowledge, explaining complex concepts step by step, developing calculation and problem-solving skills, and preparing students for examinations through targeted exam-style questions.

In private tuition, I adapt my teaching to each student`s starting point and goals. Some students require support to rebuild their foundations and confidence, while others are aiming for the highest grades and need more challenging application and examination practice.

I also have extensive experience teaching online and use digital handwriting, worked examples, diagrams, PowerPoint presentations and examination questions to make lessons interactive and focused.
