Information about Lorna
***In response to Covid-19 I am now offering online tuition for £30ph. I use software which allows video/audio chat, a shared whiteboard and screensharing facilities to as closely as possible give the experience of being in the room with students. I would consider group classes if two or more students approached me.***
I am a qualified teacher (PGCE) with 5 years of experience, with a proven track record of raising attainment within my classes at KS3, GCSE and A level. I have provided home tuition in the last 4 years and have worked with a range of age, abilities, needs and subjects (Including all major exam boards), helping each student to a successful outcome in every case. I have also successfully helped a number of students to prepare for university interviews and entrance exams.
Previously I spent 10 years working as an interdisciplinary research scientist (Ph.D) at Imperial College London. As well as teaching Ph.D and Masters students, I was employed as an undergraduate tutor for 3 years at Imperial College, whilst being actively involved and then seconded into outreach work with primary and secondary level students and have taken that expertise on to running science enrichment activities at my school, so I am very interested in engaging young people in science!
With my collection of experiences, I have an excellent understanding of not only what is interesting in science, but also what is necessary to do well in national exams and how to help students of all ages and needs to be able to achieve this.
Additionally, I was a UCAS interviewer for 5 years, so I often help with preparation for university interviews, particularly for competitive courses and universities.
I hold a current DBS check that is available on request.
I teach all three sciences up to GCSE level and chemistry up to undergraduate degree level. I charge £50 per hour for KS3, GCSE and A Level and £60 per hour for undergraduate (inorganic chemistry as specialism, but can teach other at 1st year) level tuition. I offer a £10 discount for tuition in my home.
I can be available for longer one-off tuition sessions for £55ph. Group rates are negotiable.
Availability: Evenings and weekends by prior arrangement.
£10 per hour reduction for sessions in my home.
£20 per hour reduction for online tutorials
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: Teaching at secondary level. Tutoring at GCSE and A Level. Lecturing and tutoring at undergraduate level at Imperial College London
Personal tutoring at MSc and PhD level.
5 years UCAS interviewing experience at Imperial College London.
Preparation for Oxbridge/med school interviews.
Feedback For Lorna (17)
She is just phenomenal. I started feeling deflated with no sense of confidence but with her help, I`m now able to feel better about myself and tackle A level chemistry head on!!😁;
Lorna is great, we are really happy we chose her as our daughters tutor. Lorna is talented, committed and creative and our daughter bounces out of her sessions feeling confident, supported and enlightened! Our daughter had also seen a significant improvement in her test scores at school. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Lorna to anyone looking for a science tutor.
Has greatly improved our daughters understanding of Biology (GCSE) and has also helped with an excellent understanding of GCSE chemistry and physics. Lorna and our daughter have an excellent rapport. We are very happy with Lornas tutoring.
Fantastic tutor - my sisters confidence with science has really improved in such a short time!
She has great knowledge and tutoring skills to help you organise and revise effectively.
Lorna is an excellent tutor. As well as being able to explain the subject, she`s responded really well to my daughter`s personality and her individual needs, and is helping with organisation and exam preparation. Highly recommended.
Lorna was a fantastic tutor to my year 11 son who needed support for GCSE Chemistry and Physics. She created a great rapport with her sympathetic manner and sense of humour, so he was always positive about the lessons. She knew the syllabus well and was systematic in focussing on the trickier areas, and his understanding and confidence rapidly increased - he went on to gain grade 9s in both GCSEs. I can`t recommend Lorna highly enough!
Lorna is an excellent tutor. She has managed to restore my daughters confidence in her GCSE science subjects. Lorna covers the subject in more detail and covers gaps missed in lessons at school.
Lorna helped me with some Organic Chemistry as well as some radioactive decay problems. She was patient and very good at explaining concepts I was confused by.
Lorna is very professional and has managed to give our son his confidence back in understanding chemistry. He is making great progress with her.
My daughter is feeling a lot more confident and happy about her chemistry topics after two lessons with Lorna. She is finding science enjoyable again which is great to see.
Excellent tutor. Very helpful with extremely good subject knowledge for A level and beyond. Very experienced - just what my daughter was looking for.
Lorna is an excellent tutor and I would recommend her without reservation. She built up an instant rapport with my 17 year old son and enabled him to improve rapidly in his AS chemistry in a short period of time. She is very professional and committed to her tutees but has also taken time to provide me with welcome advice when requested.
Dr Lorna is a superb and highly professional chemistry tutor. She is currently tutoring my 18 tear old son for his A Level Chemistry and has given him great confidence. We are now very hopeful that he will get the grade he needs to get to the university of his choice.
My son has been very complimentary about the support he has been receiving from Lorna. She has been resourceful in meeting his specific learning needs, helping him to make the connections and developing his understand of chemistry.
Lorna has been excellent! She is always very well prepared and has extensive knowledge of the exam boards. I would thoroughly recommend her as a first rate tutor
Lorna is well-organised, reliable, helpful and positive.
