Information about Joseph
I am completing my PhD in pure mathematics at the University of Southampton, before which I gained a first class MMath at the University of Warwcik.
I am also enthusiastic about teaching: being a PhD students has afforded me the opportunity to get involved in extra curricular events involving local schools, such as the Cipher Challenge and running an event at the national Big Bang Science Fair in London.
My style of teaching tends to fall in to two categories. If time is short and exams/deadlines are imminent I tend to go through many exam style exercises. This allows me and the student to notice which questions they can most easily and rapidly improve, and focus on these, as well as decreasing stress and worry about the upcoming exams.
If more time can be afforded then I will ideally start with more fundational aspects (of course, this is relative to the student), and make sure that these are solid before moving on. Then I will find out which areas of mathematics the student is already best at, and try to expand out from there by looking at related problems, so they feel more comfortable with new material. Of course, all of this will be backed up by many exercises.
Availability: Evenings and weekends
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have taught undergraduate students both Warwick and Southampton universities for the last 5 years, receiving positive feedback and extra teaching loads. I have also privately tutored maths at GCSE, A-Level and undergraduate levels from 2010 through to 2012.
