Information about Laura
I`m Laura, and I`m in the process of completing my PGDE in teaching physics with science. Before this, I have completed a PhD in physics, with SOFI CDT at the University of Edinburgh. Previously I`ve completed a Master in Science at Queen Mary, University of London, as well as A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
In addition I have spent one year between my degrees as a research assistant at the University of Cambridge.
My experience has given me an eye for detail in physics, and a deep understanding allowing me to break things up into smaller, more digestible pieces of information. Along with this, I have learned how to communicate science to a wide range of abilities, and age groups, from primary school children to fellow PhDs or experts in my field.
This communication has been where my passion in science has always been, which became clear during my PhD. My best moments were enthusiastically discussing physics research with my peers, which often involved one of us explaining unfamiliar concepts to the other.
Even before my academic career, I`ve always loved maths and science, as it is a window into how the world really works. As a subject, I enjoy how logical it is, and how step-by-step there is often a clear answer. I`m enjoying my studies into better teaching, and I love engaging with people, and sharing my interest in these subjects with others.
At this time I am only offering online tutoring.
My other hobbies include playing the piano and indoor rock climbing.
Availability: I`m available at the weekend and have some availability in the evenings
Willing to travel: 1 miles
Experience: I`ve been tutoring for a bit more than a year now, and have taught over 400 hours. I find it a fun and rewarding experience to gently disentangle confusion in physics and maths. I have a conversational style when discussing how to approach a question, and as previously mentioned, can break it down into smaller parts to help the student learn how to solve problems.
My previous experience includes 13 weeks of placement with schools, two semesters of demonstrating maths tutorials in first year physics in the University of Edinburgh, as well as first year labs at both the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge.
