My name is John, and I have 28 years’ experience teaching A’level. I also have 10 years’ combined experience, as an A’level examiner and principal/lead examiner, with two exam boards.

I specialise in History, Politics and Ancient History at A’level and have also tutored Maths and History to GCSE level as well as supporting successful Oxbridge candidates.

I believe that the key to success at A’level/GCSE is fully understanding the requirements of exam questions and mark schemes, and it is these areas I focus on in my tutoring, although subject content will also be covered. I appreciate that tutees are often looking for a different approach from the ones which they have experienced in mainstream education, in order to unlock their true potential. My manner is friendly and supportive, while being consistently focused on improving exam technique.

Availability: I tutor from home essentially (as I don`t drive), and am from August 2019, available pretty much all of the time as I have effectively retired from college teaching this summer.

Experience: I have 28 years’ experience teaching A’level and have taught for 25 years in sixth form/FE colleges (including being head of department in a Humanities area which was graded outstanding by Ofsted), during which time I have covered a very broad range of historical periods.

I have 10 years of examining under my belt with AQA and OCR, and have also co-written 2 A’level text books, and had a number of articles published in A’level magazines.

My most recent Maths GCSE tutee achieved a grade 8, having progressed from mock exam marks of 20-30% in the 5 months I was tutoring her. My last Ancient History A`level tutee obtained an A* grade (as well as a place at Oxford University), and my latest History A`level tutee got an A grade.
