Information about Karen
I am an experienced fully qualified Secondary Science teacher with a 2.1 BSc Hons in Biochemistry. I have enjoyed tutoring KS3 and KS4 students in General Science as well as the individual Sciences. Alongside tutoring I have worked for Kingston Borough Council as an educational adviser. I pride myself on finding innovative ways for students to learn, gain confidence and retain information for examinations. I try to bring Science to life using on-line resources as well as more conventional texts. Seeing the "Light bulb moments" for students is what drives me. All students can reach their true potential with the right guidance.
Availability: My current tuition timetable is now full. I will be able to offer intensive tuition across the next half term. I offer tuition to students who feel that they would like to consolidate their learning and grow in confidence, resilience and Scientific understanding. I can also suggest effective revision and examination techniques so that students feel ready to take on all future challenges.
I usually suggest a one hour introductory session with each new student. This enables us to set out our learning aims and objectives and draw a plan of action. I am happy to work with students for 1 hour or 1.5 hours as 2 hours can be a bit much for students. If this sounds like the right kind of intervention for your child`s needs then do get in contact.
Willing to travel: 8 miles
Experience: I graduated from Birmingham University in 1995 with a 2.1 in Biochemistry and then completed a PGCE in Secondary Science. I have worked as a Science teacher and tutor for many years and also as an educational adviser to local and national government. I tutor students in KS3/KS4 individual Sciences as well as double award GCSE, making sure that students achieve the required but often higher levels/grades than predicted. After over twenty years I have a proven track record and my methods and insight give students the full benefit of my experience.Contact this Tutor

Teachers require so many positive qualities like care, compassion, patience and commitment. Karen have all these qualities in abundance. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks a lot Karen, love your enthusiasm, approach and energy you provide in your lessons! Great role model and i can see Max is progressing already! Thanks very much!
Excellent teacher improved my son and he got 8 in chemistry at GCSEs
We moved to the UK recently and my daughter started secondary school (year 7) at the end of April. Although she loves science; she was quite behind the curriculum here. So she panicked as she has not enough time to get prepared for end of year exams. She started to study with Karen; and after 8 hours lessons, she was ready for the exam and got one of the highest scores in the class. Yes, my daughter has a great capability of learning; but we have to accept that Karen was a great tutor and make a huge contribution to my daughter`s success. She is fun, she is a real expert of teaching, she loves what she does. My daughter really likes to study with her so we will continue to study with Karen for next year as well. Thanks Karen and a very big 5 star for you!
She love and passionate about what she do my son likes her and happy to
Learn with her
Karen is lovely, she is so enthusiastic and my daughter finds her sessions with her so helpful and useful.
Thank you Karen for your enthusiasm and ability to put my daughter at ease. It is amazing to hear her say she enjoys science lessons...something I never thought I`d hear! You are really helping her confidence.
Karen has been tutoring my daughter for GCSE science since last summer. My daughter does not enjoy science and struggles with it. But Karen has raised her confidence and her grades in all three subjects. Karen has endless patience, her enthusiasm and positivity is contagious and she adapts whatever she`s teaching to make it understandable. My daughter adores her and enjoys that she can ask Karen any question without feeling self conscious and "stupid". I highly recommend Karen.
Karen has been brilliant, swooping in to help with last minute confidence building and revision of tricky topics for our year 11 daughter. She certainly knows her science and is passionate about passing on her knowledge.
Karen has been tutoring my daughter for the past 3 months in preparation for her GCSEs focusing on her 3 science subjects. She has been brilliant. She is very engaging and gives lots of positive feedback. Furthermore she uses a variety of teaching methods using my daughters past papers / mocks to explain where she can improve. She makes the lessons more interesting by reinforcing subject matter with useful websites / videos and by directing her to different learning resources. She also encourages regular reading of chapters from her textbooks. I feel confident my daughter will be well prepared when her exams come around in the Summer.
Karen is an enthusiastic tutor and determined to help. She is up to date with current requirements for GCSEs. Emma enjoys her Chemistry lessons with Karen. She gives her homework and gives us good feedback on the lesson.
Karen has not been tutoring my son very long, but she is excellent and my son is really engaged with her lessons.
Karen has been an absolute delight in helping my daughter through her GCSEs. She has supported Imy in the final months motivating and building her confidence so much so she now wants to take Chemistry at A level ! . Thank you so much Karen for all your help and support.
Karen has been tutoring my son for over six months now in science, covering all three science subjects.
He has found her lessons very valuable and interesting and I have noticed his confidence improve with the subjects.
She has also provided guidance and feedback on school homework and exams which has also been very useful to his on going progress.
Karen is the most enthusiastic teacher I have ever come across. She loves her subject and this empowers my daughter (year 7) to take a greater interest in the subject. Karen is extremely patient and kind, and my daughter looks forward to her tutoring sessions with Karen.
Karen is a patient tutor. She explains topics in a very straightforward manner. My son feels a lot more positive about science now. I would thoroughly recommend Karen as a tutor.
Our daughter clicked immediately with Karen and felt very comfortable talking about what she didn`t understand or had missed. Karen`s enthusiasm for her subject is infectious, and along with her great knowledge and fantastic sense of humour has helped our daughter to tackle what were for her 3 very difficult subjects with a "can do" attitude.
Really enthusiastic and knowledgeable tutor - we`ve only used Karen a few times to help with some last minute cramming, but hopefully it will have paid off! Thanks.
Karen is brilliant! She has made a great difference to my son`s confidence in Science. He was struggling a little with his GSCE science subjects and not reaching his target grade of B and with his exams fast approaching and his ISA practicals imminent, we decided to get him a tutor. What a difference Karen has made! After one session with Karen my son got an A in his additional science practical and then an A* in his core science practical. She has been able to cover a lot of subject matter with him and given him advice as to how to tackle the exam questions. Above all else, I think it`s Karen`s enthusiasm which seems to make a real difference. My son asked to continue having sessions with Karen up until the exams and with only two weeks until they start, he is approaching the exams with far more confidence.
Karen is very cheerful, positive and encouraging. She makes lessons interesting and has helped my son hugely, he is happier and more confident in the subject, so much so that he has moved up a set at school.
Karen has been a fantastic help for my child. She is kind ,patient and fun and Has brought the sciences to life with real world examples and explanations. She is one hundred percent reliable and Has helped my daughter enjoy and succeed at all three sciences.
Karen is excellent. My daughter`s school were sucking the life out of her natural love and enthusiasm for science. Karen has restored the love. She tailor makes each session to our needs and brings fun and laughter to each session, which is astounding considering the weighty subjects they cover. A fine example of how all teachers should be. Her charges are very lucky indeed.

Lovely, friendly and cheerful lady. Good with children. Karen worked with my 13/14 year old and brought her back up to a good standard in Science, really boosting her confidence. 1 hr a week did it. I recommend her without reserve, she was well worth it.
Karen Is a very good teacher who brings humour and clarity to lessons. She understands how we would like to learn very quickly and is a very efficient teacher. She always tries to encourage you even if you were very upset about a mark or got something wrong.
