Information about James
Hello,
I am a chemistry graduate, previously a teacher of science, and tutor of 7 years.
You will find me conversational, patient, easy going, knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry. The emphasis of our time together is to impart a deep understanding, not simply to remember the words required to pick up marks in the exam.
I have a thorough and profound understanding across many topics in science, which really helps with understanding and deep learning. I will never teach you to just `remember facts`, I will work to help you discover and understand scientific principles intuitively for yourself, so that you REALLY understand. With science, how you think about a problem is as important as the correct answer.
My tutoring generally involves lots of dialogue. I am not happy you understand something until you can explain it to me. I will also get you to make revision flash cards on key points as we go along, so that by the end of our session you will have something to refer to, and structure revision as you approach the exam.
Around exam time, it is important that the emphasis is on exam technique, becoming familiar with past-papers.
Availability: I run my own business and can work flexibly to suit you. During the coronavirus pandemic I will be offering tutoring and home schooling remotely through skype and other platforms.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: During my first year of teacher training, I was observed by Ofsted. Ofsted said my subject knowledge was `outstanding` They said my passion for science was infectious and that they were pleased a good scientist had chosen to enter the teaching profession.
I now work in medical education, and campaign on issues of science policy. I have tutored many students through GCSE and A-level, and happy to provide references on request.
