I am Head of Ancient and Modern Languages at a leading independent school in Cornwall, with over a decade of experience teaching Latin and Classical Civilisation. I’ve supported learners at every stage – from complete beginners to Oxbridge applicants – and strongly believe that every pupil, regardless of starting point, can thrive in the study of the ancient world.
My approach is thoughtful, supportive and ambitious: I take as much pride in helping a student move from a grade 5 to a 7 as I do guiding another towards an A*. Lessons are tailored to each learner, blending rigour with encouragement and building confidence alongside deep subject knowledge.
I always set clear goals with each pupil and provide regular feedback, so that progress is visible and shared. Whether building vocabulary, translation technique or essay skills, I aim to develop both confidence and clarity at every stage.
Availability: My schedule is flexible and built around my students` needs. I offer both long-term weekly sessions and short-term blocks of lessons designed to help pupils meet specific goals – whether that’s tackling exam technique, building translation skills, or revising set texts. Daytime, evening and weekend availability can usually be accommodated, and I teach both term-time and during holidays.

Experience: I have taught Classics for more than ten years, across every major exam board, and at all levels – from prep school Latin to A Level Classical Civilisation, from Oxbridge preparation to adult learners returning to the subject for pleasure.
As a Head of Classics and now Head of Ancient and Modern Languages, I’ve led departments, designed curricula, supported PGCE trainees, and mentored pupils through university applications. I’ve also written study resources for ZigZag Education, including literature guides for set texts, and led educational tours to Pompeii and Rome – where I have also worked as a guide.
I hold a BA in Classics, an MA in Education, and a PGCE, and bring academic depth as well as classroom expertise to every lesson.

Dan has helped my son for Common Entrance Latin and in a couple of lessons he improved significantly. During the first lesson Dan identified which the areas needed more support. My son did well in the exam and approached it with confidence. Dan is professional, always on time and his lessons are structured and engaging. He provides feedbacks, advices and interesting learning resources which my son enjoyed while revising. I highly recommend Dan.
