Information about Nick

I have a PhD in philosophy and extensive experience teaching philosophy (including ethics) at both A-Level and University level. Although I am now working on other projects, I still have plenty of time to continue philosophy tutoring and take on a number of A-Level students. More importantly, I want to do this because I greatly enjoy teaching philosophy. Why? Many A-level students understandably struggle with the complex nature of the subject, especially when their school teachers are not very good at explaining it. So, I find it very rewarding when I can help students overcome this struggle and become confident in their understanding of the subject and their ability to plan and write essays.

In addition to tutoring for A-Level Philosophy, I can also provide tutoring for the Religious Studies A-Level as long as the focus is on the philosophy of religion and ethics (if you’re unsure if that’s you, please get in touch to let me know the details of your A-Level).

Previous experience has taught me that a 1-hour session is too short. Instead, I recommend a 1.5-hour or a 2-hour session (with a 5-minute break in the middle). However, the first session will just be an hour to allow me to meet the student (and a parent), understand their needs, and establish a strategy to help them achieve their goals.

I’m mainly interested in providing online tutoring. However, I can provide in-person tutoring in the Reading area, but I may have to charge extra to cover travel time and costs.

WHY DO YOU COST MORE THAN MANY OTHER TUTORS?
I charge more than many – but far from all – other tutors, mainly for the following two reasons.
Firstly, I have more tutoring experience than many/most other tutors. Experience is important as you know what problems can occur in tutoring and how to avoid them.

Secondly, most tutors underprice themselves – I certainly used to. Of course, a cheaper tutor may seem to be in your best interests. But you will find that, after a while, they will have less time and motivation to prepare thoroughly for your sessions, possibly due to taking on lots of other students to have a sufficient income. This, in turn, will compromise the quality of their tutoring. The less you pay, the less you should expect. I charge a fair rate that covers my time with you and the preparation between sessions, ensuring I can deliver high-quality sessions every time.
