Information about Alice

I am an energetic and enthusiastic teacher able to work with a wide range of abilities and ages. I like to draw on a student`s interests and strengths to help them conquer their challenges. I aim to improve students confidence, understanding, and ability to apply their knowledge.

My first lesson is always about getting to know the student; what they want to do, what they like doing, how they like learning, what they want to achieve, what they are wanting help with and why they are doing maths. Next I focus on any topics that that student wants to improve on. Then it is question practice, working from simple to complex questions we reinforce knowledge and develop strategies for breaking down complex questions. Finally it is exam practice time and the pressure is on. We work on developing the students resilience to stress. Throughout my time tutoring I set "homework", to help improve the other skills needed for a good grasp of maths. These can include; having a creative hobby, reading books, or playing board games (why is explained in the skills development section below).

MATHS TIPS!
These are a few of the solutions I use with students the most.

1) Understand what maths can do for you.
Maths is in our every day, from baking bread to shopping and from gaming to construction. Finding what maths can do for you is the best way to start engaging with it.

2) Not sure how to tackle a question?
Make a flow chart of all the related techniques and when to use them, then include some examples. This handy reference helps you to navigate unexpected or complex questions.

3) Rushing in an exam?
Take a deep breath and slow yourself down by reading with your finger or pen. Point to each word in the question, or each section of a diagram.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT
If you are struggling with maths it might not be because you can`t do maths. Many students are very capable of doing maths just struggle with some of the other necessary skills. These broader skills are worth working on a little every day. The more the student gets to grips with these skills the more their confidence increases.

Memory.
If you cant remember the start of the question by the time you get to the end of it then you have no hope of answering it. Work on developing your short and long term memory. Talk with someone recalling all the details of the week, in the evening try and recount the day, or even try and play pairs with a deck of cards. Memory is about finding the knowledge already in your head. One of the best way to recall information is to make up a short story about it.

Visual reasoning.
A lot of complex questions require you to create a mental image of the situation described to understand it. Paint, draw, design, learn origami, or even PC gaming can be a good way of developing spacial awareness.

Creativity.
Being able to create a solution is at the heart of problem solving. Read books, write stories or colour in; the aim here is to practice making something new.

Quantitative skills.
Craft things, statistics and mechanics questions make a lot more sense if you have been messing around building bookcases from scratch, making a tyre swing, playing with a sewing machine, or baking. Anything where you have to think about how much stuff you have and how it interacts with other stuff will help here.

Strategy.
Play board games. These are a great way of using maths! they teach you how to create strategies and adapt to changing situations using creative problem solving. In addition they are an opportunity to learn how to cope in a competitive environment and help to build confidence. Cooperative board games teach you how to learn from other people, while competitive games teach you how to assess someone else`s strategy.

Reasoning.
Critical thinking may be missed from the curriculum but it is a skill we should all have. Being able to dissect a concept, determine its validity, and then form an opinion about it is a skill that will help you develop good `maths instincts`; and always trust your maths instincts.

Fun.
Your brain learns best when you are enjoying it. Look after your mood, stay active, and take a break from time to time. It will help your focus, memory, and performance.

Rest and relaxation.
Relax, nothing is perfect. Aim for things being a little better today than they were yesterday. Rest is very important, good quality sleep, spending time with friends, or having a hobby; they all give your brain a much needed break so it can sort and file all the new things you have been learning.

I am a final year pharmacy student and every year we have calculations exams with a pass mark of 75% or above, so as you can imagine I needed someone really good to help me achieve this as I am really bad at maths. Alice has been a pleasure to work with. Shes amazing and she explains things so well and in a really easy way. Anyone that has problems with maths should get in touch with this lady! She also gives brilliant online tutorials and powerpoints over the internet if for whatever reason a face to face tutorial isnt possible. Thanks for everything Alice! xxxx
