Information about Kate

I have always had a real love and passion for Mathematics, from my very early days at primary school through to University and my teaching career. I enjoy the challenge of a difficult question and the sense of achievement and completeness when it is solved! Even in my spare time, I enjoy puzzles with a mathematical slant, and have been known to complete the odd A Level exam paper for fun. I graduated with BSc (Hons) Mathematics at the University of Plymouth in 2000, gaining a 2:1 degree, and went on to complete my PGCE at the College of St Mark and St John in 2004.

I like to utilise many different teaching methods when tutoring, tailored to the student`s needs. I find that many students requiring tutoring have a low level of self-confidence in the subject, and so my aim is to highlight areas that the student does well in and use them to build upon areas that need work.

I have a large range of resources to use in sessions, and my time at Lipson has equipped me with an excellent variety of teaching and learning strategies. It all depends on how the student learns best, and by working together we can identify individual learning styles.

Success at Mathematics depends, amongst other things, on organisation and practice. I spend time with students on note-taking and working through questions in a methodical manner. I also spend time looking at exam papers and what the examiners are looking out for in both method and answer.

Availability: All of my evening and weekend spaces are currently full. I have selected spaces available in the daytime, Monday to Friday, between 9.30 and 2.30.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I qualified as a teacher in 2004, and went straight into a job at Lipson Community College. Within a year I was promoted to Key Stage 5 Mathematics Co-ordinator, where I was in charge of the A-Level Maths delivered at the College. As well as my A-Level commitments, I taught many GCSE classes, and have taught students with a wide range of abilities, from those aiming for A and Astar grades to those who found the subject much more of a challenge.

I left Lipson in 2010 in order to spend time looking after my two young children, and began tutoring in April 2011. I have tutored many students since then, covering GCSE Mathematics and Statistics, and A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I also have experience as an assessor for an exam board, which means that I can give advice as to exactly what an exam board is looking for in answers to a paper.
