Information about Emily
Being in a diabetic coma and spending a week in an Intensive Care Unit was hardly the way I expected to make my mark in my first year at my sixth form college. This was, however, what happened after two months of being undiagnosed and seriously ill, yet still going to college every day regardless. Furthermore, even though I had missed all of my January exams and was taken into hospital the day of my first Sociology exam, I relentlessly continued to study both at home then at college and went on to get an A* in A2 Sociology including one paper where I scored 118/120.
Challenge is certainly something I am used to and something I embrace. I moved from an American school to a British school in Year Eleven with the challenge of a brand-new curriculum and one year in which to do my IGCSEs, a situation which enabled me to prioritise my work and pushed me to meet high demand deadlines. Furthermore, having lived in England, South Africa, the UAE, Turkey and China and having moved thirteen times and been to nine different schools, I am truly a Third Culture Kid, having lived in and experienced a range of diverse cultures. I have also seen first-hand how culture has a direct effect on an individual and how they respond to different issues raised in discussion as well as to how they react to living in a different culture to their own. Having this unique background helped drive me towards Sociology and Cultural Studies at the University of York, which combined with my experiences of living abroad have enabled me to analyse the world with a critical eye. Sociology is my biggest passion and I hope to share this as well as my knowledge to you or your child.
