I am a Maths assessment specialist and, for the last 15 years, I have worked with young people who for one reason or another experience barriers to learning Maths at all levels.
I specialise in using techniques to help students either refine and deepen their understanding and application of mathematical concepts, or to help them overcome a specific barrier to learning Maths. I have found that students often find Maths difficult due to preconceptions and prior experiences, perhaps from the earliest ages. Many of my students have encountered difficulties as a result of dyslexia and dyscalculia, causing them to develop problems with numeracy. It is estimated that about 60% of students with dyslexia have maths learning difficulties and this can apply to all students, from those who struggle to pass exams to those who otherwise would be achieving at the highest levels. This leads to a lack of confidence and sometimes it is difficult to overcome this in a classroom environment, where peer pressure and a lack of time can make it difficult to speak up and ask questions. In addition, Maths is such a fundamental skill that once problems are encountered, it is easy for a student to become disengaged and reinforce their belief that the subject is not for them.

I strongly believe that tutoring offers the opportunity and time to develop skills on a step by step basis, and to then vary the pace and depth of challenge, according to the student`s individual needs.
I work hard to develop a positive relationship, based on a comfortable learning atmosphere, where I encourage my students to ask questions, challenge and so gain a sense of control in their learning. All my teaching follows the curricula and specifications very closely, so that when faced with exams, there should be no surprises and the students should feel they have the confidence to not only solve problems, but to interpret and apply ideas and so achieve at the highest levels. I find that this approach does result in significant improvements in attainment. I am very happy to provide testimonials and references to this effect.


In my experience working with many students in this way, on a one to one basis, provides a very different experience to classroom learning and can produce some amazing results. My aim is to improve on the students predicted grade and for them to go away with a sense of achievement.
