Information about Ben
Hello! I`m Ben, and I`ve just (June 2020) finished my 4th and final year of an Integrated Master`s degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. I took physics, maths, geology and computer science in my first year, and specialised in physics and applied maths after that.
I have a real passion for my subject, and perhaps an even greater passion for communicating my love and knowledge of the subjects, helping students to gain intuition and insight into the workings of both the abstract world of numbers and the highly mathematical world around us!
This year I achieved a high 1st class in my physics MSci (specialising in theoretical and mathematical options), and I look forward to continuing my studies with a PhD starting in 2021. I also love languages, music, tennis and cycling and kept these up throughout my degree.
Back in 2016, I achieved an A* in Maths, Further Maths and Physics A Levels - having repeatedly worked through and overcome the common stumbling blocks of school level maths and physics myself, I hope to help you do the same. I now have over a year`s experience teaching students at levels ranging from KS3 to A Level, as well as the Oxford University PAT test (entrance exam).
ABOUT MY SESSIONS
________________________________
I aim to make my lessons friendly and relaxed, creating an atmosphere where students can try different approaches and ask questions without fear of being wrong. It is extremely rewarding to watch students develop their confidence and understanding, and I hope it is rewarding for them too.
I tend to emphasise intuitive understanding over memorising how to do solve specific problems. This is especially important in mathematical subjects because each level of understanding acts as a foundation for the next, yet it is often under-emphasized at school, leaving some students increasingly lost simply because a small gap in understanding has not been identified. I have found that this approach increases students confidence to work through unseen problems and is often the best way to boost grades at any level.
My teaching methods are flexible however, and they vary depending on the student and the student`s wishes. Different people think about and navigate these subjects in hugely different ways, and I hope to help you find a way that works for you.
Availability: I currently have availability every weekday. Lessons are all online for the moment.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I now have nearly 2 years of experience teaching maths, physics and further maths to students aged 11 to 18. I have also helped students with university entrance exams including the Oxford University PAT test.
Specific case study - "Ben is currently helping me for my maths and physics A-level and has made everything so much clearer by explaining the things that I struggle with in a way that I can understand. This helped me go from a C in maths and a D in physics to a B in both subjects."
