Information about Joanne

Cambridge Music Grad & Founder of "GetGrade5Theory"

I am a Music Graduate from the University of Cambridge who loves all things music, teaching, and helping others on their musical journey. I am also the founder of an online music tuition platform called Get Grade 5 Theory (www.getgrade5theory) - please check this out if you`re looking for music theory support.

MY MUSICAL BACKGROUND
I have grade 8 distinction in saxophone, clarinet and piano and I attended the Junior Royal Northern College of music during my school years. I went on to read Music at Cambridge University, graduating with First Class Honours.

As a classically trained musician, who has regularly performed in big bands, funk, jazz and pop groups I have a solid understanding and appreciation for a variety of genres. This combination of experience means I can confidently support my students across a variety of genres and composers.

In 2022 I set up my own online learning platform’ (“Get Grade 5 Theory”) to support students taking their ABRSM grade 5 theory exam. This platform has successfully helped, and continues to help, many students pass their theory, at a fraction of the cost of one-to-one tuition.

MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND STYLE
I am familiar teaching all levels and abilities of music, from age 7-75! This includes ABRSM exams, preparation for college/university auditions, theory and GCSE/A-Level Music. However, I also understand that exams are not for everyone and I teach many students who want to learn for fun - especially adults. You`re never "too old" to learn an instrument, so if you`ve been thinking about it recently, go for it!

As well as teaching one-to-one (and in groups) for over 7 years, I have taught internationally (China and Ethiopia), and within UK schools. During covid-19 much of my teaching moved online. This has worked very successfully, and has enabled me to teach pupils all across the world.

All of my students are encouraged to set themselves a goal e.g. an exam, a specific piece, or a certain grade they want to reach. I also encourage students to play music they enjoy. Whether that`s music by Hans Zimmer, Gershwin, Bach or even a piece they`ve heard on Animal Crossing!

ABRSM EXAMS
For those looking to take exams, I work towards ABRSM practical and performance grades and 100% of my students have passed. I support my students throughout their exam journey, but I also offer advise for those close to their exam who need some extra support. This might include:
- Providing feedback for performance video + areas to improve
- Recording accompaniment for instrumental exams
- Advice on how to reach distinction level

OTHER INFORMATION
As a dyslexic individual, I understand the importance of finding a style of learning that suits each student. I am also proof that dyslexia does not prevent you from reaching your musical goals!

I am a strong advocate of music lessons being a great benefit to mental health. If you`re looking to take up lessons for this reason, please drop me a message so we can chat further.

Lessons run all year round including school holidays. Please let me know in advance of any holiday absences, and note that slots cannot be held over any period longer than 4 consecutive lessons.

All lessons take place online, for this reason I generally do not take students younger than 10 years of age
