Information about Christian

I am a lively, upbeat, enthusiastic and happy person that makes learning an enjoyable experience.
I have many different interests/hobbies (ranging from Music, to Art, to Weightlfiting, Snowboarding, Basketball, and so on), I love learning new things and telling awful dad jokes.
I have found that almost nothing is worth not enjoying life for and helping people realise a passion/ability for something they never thought they would enjoy (typically academia) is one thing I get great satisfaction out of. I guarantee to ignite a spark of appreciation for the sciences that was waiting to be lit.

I am also very happy to provide contact details of my previous tutees to testify to my abilities and personality. Being a scientist - you should always require proof!

Availability: I am currently working towards opening my own coffee shop and so being self employed enables me to generally be very flexible to suit your availability.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring since late 2012. I have had ~12 private tutees (one-on-one tutoring) over the years whom I have helped through their GCSE`s/A-Levels in many subjects but focusing mainly on Maths, Physics and PE (which I achieved A*, A*, A respectively at A-Level). Whilst in 6th form I also worked at Explore Learning in Walton which became the most improved branch in the UK whilst I was there. This type of tutoring was very different (usually 6 to 1) with minimal personal interaction as there was no separation by ability/requirement. I left after a year and a half as I could offer so much more value to my tutees than was possible in this environment and the company was not willing to adapt even though it was in the best interest of their customers.

I have had only a few personal tutees up until now as I have worked closely with each of them leading up to their exams and really focused on personalising their tuition to what is most important for them to achieve the best result.

I noticed during my own time passing through the education system that the tests are generally algorithmic in nature. GCSE`s & A-Levels are highly predictable and it is possible to achieve the highest grade with minimal understanding/ability - there are patterns that can be learnt and applied to complete the questions if the past papers are analysed effectively.
For some this is exactly what is required, if they have no interest in the subject and will not be taking it further, so I aim to give them the tools to achieve the best grade.
For those looking to take these subjects further I do the same but also go considerably deeper into the topic to develop an understanding that will overall change the way they approach a question/challenge. I`m sure your children will be able to testify to this: at school, students are told the titles of the topics and they are treated as seperate entities when more often that not they are separate branches of the same type of mathematics that drastically overlap. Developing this type of understanding is what really will take my tutee`s academic knowledge to the next level.

I have BSc Hons degree in Physics from the University of Bath. The biggest thing I learned from my time there (and my year long working placement in London as a technology consultant for Deloitte) was how to break down a question/problem to `first-principles` (as my fellow physicist would say) and attempt the question from the ground up. This is a unique method in problem solving as it strips down the question to one`s fundamental understanding of the topic and enables you to solve complex problems with simple assumptions and logical methodical thinking. This is inevitably what I aim to teach those who look to take the sciences further.
It is very much possible to teach this type of thinking and problem solving which can be used in all aspects of life, contrary to popular assumption that academic results are "talent based" - hard (& smart) work is very underrated
