Information about David

With the vast majority of schools now employing cheap and "easy to manage" teachers, rather than the most experienced and talented, getting a tutor who really knows his stuff has never been more important. With a B.Sc. in chemistry and physics, and a PGCE in mathematics, I have university qualifications, from very good colleges, in all three subjects that I tutor. As well as having taught all of these in schools, I only tutor at A-level or equivalent. Therefore I have lots of experience teaching sixth formers in them. If your school teacher or textbook makes a mistake, or leaves out something important, then there`s an excellent chance I will pick up on it.

Unlike so many who enter teaching because they can`t get another job, or can`t think of anything else to do, I became a teacher after 20 very successful (and lucrative) years developing computer software. It was something I wanted to do in subjects that have always interested me. Proof of this long term interest is that I got my grade A chemistry A-level at 16, and took the school maths prize in Y13, beating students who went on to study maths at Oxford and Cambridge. Much more recently I`ve published 5 books to help maths students get the best out of their calculators. In fact, it`s not that unlikely that you or someone you know is using one of them.

My style of teaching is very informal and relaxed, which most students seem to appreciate.

When you come to me, you get to choose what you want help with. Unlike most tutors I won`t try to tell you what the lesson should be about, unless this is something you want me to do. In fact, some of my students have been known to ask for (and receive) help in maths, physics and chemistry, all in one session.

Availability: 9.00am to 8.00pm every day.

It should also be noted that I only tutor from my home. With the number of students I tutor travelling would not be practical.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: As mentioned above, I have qualifications from excellent UK universities in all the subjects that I offer, and I am a UK qualified teacher. However, I`m very proud of the fact that most of my classroom teaching has been done outside the UK. This means that I have taught in good, well resourced, schools, which are not afflicted by the constant disruption from which so many UK schools suffer, and where the academic expectations of the school, parents and students are high. In such schools one is able to concentrate on ones teaching, which is seldom the case in UK schools. This is why I am now a full-time tutor. I can devote my energies completely to teaching the subjects I enjoy. In this capacity I teach many more hours A-level than the vast majority of classroom teachers. In fact, I probably teach more A-level in each of my subjects than most school based teachers do.

As already mentioned, as well as teaching in England I`ve also taught in New Zealand, Germany and Italy. I`ve taught across the entire 11 to 18 age range and at all abilities from struggling 11 year old students to top set 18 year old students. I`ve taught in all-boys schools, all-girls schools, mixed schools, FE and sixth form colleges. This has been at schools that get good results!

As well as A-Level, I`ve taught IB Diploma: at both Standard and Higher Levels (also Mathematical Studies). This has been mainly maths, but also some physics and chemistry. I`ve given intensive revision courses in Standard Level Mathematics, and Higher Level Mathematics, which were very well received. I should also mention that IB Diploma is more demanding than A-level - on both the student and the teacher.

So, whether you need help with your chemistry, physics, or ANY area of maths, I`ve got recent experience teaching all of these. This has been across several exam boards: Edexcel, AQA and OCR.

Among the schools whose students I have recently tutored are: Ashmole Academy, Dame Alice Owen`s School, Enfield County School, Enfield Grammar School, Highlands School, Hockerill Anglo-European College, Princess Helena College, Southgate School, St. Michael`s Catholic Grammar School, The Latymer School, The Royal Masonic School for Girls, and Woodhouse College.

Great tutor. Really easy to talk to and work with. Helped me understand a lot if aspects in physics that I didn`t before. I now enjoy physics as I have a much better understanding, and I feel confident for my exams.

Tutors Response :

After coming for just two sessions I got an email from this student`s father saying that he was previously used to being tutored at home, and was looking for someone that would come to him. This was a couple of months ago. I suspect the low rating is due to the fact that I wouldn`t make an exception for this boy, or have him back after he messed me around, and then found that he couldn`t get a better tutor. Before he bought my details he was well aware that students have to come to me.
