Information about Alexander
Hello! I`m Alex, I am a doctoral researcher in physical chemistry at UCL. My research is interested in the ultrafast dynamics of solar cells.
I completed an integrated masters programme at UEA in chemistry and obtained first (starred) class honours. I specialised in inorganic electrochemistry but studied all core aspects (organic, physical and inorganic) of chemistry to a masters level.
I`m extremely enthusiastic about science, and this comes across in my tutoring style. I like to create an environment where students don`t feel under pressure to get things right and where they feel comfortable asking the questions that they might not ask in front of 30 other students. I personally take a tremendous amount of satisfaction and enjoyment from teaching, and I really want my students to feel the same way.
Availability: I am available weekday evenings and weekends.
Willing to travel: 1 miles
Experience: During my Masters I was a tutor in a peer assisted learning scheme (PAL) for first and second year undergraduates of chemistry. This involved leading problem solving sessions for a group of 5-8 students with the ethos of solving problems together.
Another program I tutored on was called "spectroscopy in a suitcase". This wonderful scheme takes research level equipment to secondary schools and science fairs and runs interactive workshops and demonstrations with A-level students of chemistry.
At UCL I run tutorials, workshops, lab demonstrations and complete marking on 3 different modules covering first and second year chemistry undergraduates. These modules include: Atomic spectroscopy, an introduction to physical chemistry and physical chemistry for medicinal chemistry.
Further to this in 2018, I spent a term teaching 1st year chemistry international students from Northeastern University Boston as an employee of CIEE (council for international education exchange). The roles involved lecturing to 70+ students, running tutorials, labs and workshops.
Finally, for the past 2 years I have tutored chemistry GCSE and A-level to family friends. I am familiar with all three examining bodies (OCR, edexcel and AQA).
