Information about Joe

Hi, I’m Joe – I tutor maths and physics, but really, I help students understand things they thought they couldn’t.

Back when I was doing my GCSEs, I asked a lot of questions.

Some of them probably sounded a bit silly. People laughed. Teachers sometimes got frustrated. But I kept asking, because I genuinely wanted to understand what was going on — not just memorise steps, but actually get it.

Eventually, the laughter stopped. People got used to it. And then something unexpected happened…

Classmates started coming to me with their questions.

They hadn’t felt comfortable asking in class, but they still wanted to understand. So, I explained things the way I saw them, and it often helped.

And that’s how I became a tutor! (without realising it)

What I learned from that time is that most students aren’t lazy or “bad at maths” — they just haven’t been shown how to learn actively.

In most classrooms, learning is passive. You sit, you listen, you take notes, and later you try to memorise everything.

For some people, that works. But for many, it just leads to stress and confusion.

I encourage a different approach: ask questions, explore ideas, make mistakes, and talk through the topic until it starts to make sense. It’s more efficient, more engaging, and — importantly — it builds confidence.

When you truly understand something, you can solve unfamiliar problems and explain your thinking. That’s the goal.

…but that is not the best part!

The best part is practicing the most useful skill for life – the ability to learn.

Even now, I am still learning new things all the time, exploring new ideas, making mistakes, finding new ways to do things, and asking the same silly questions. And I love the journey.

As a tutor, my job is to inspire my students to be active in their learning as I am. Eventually, many of my students know a topic so well they could teach a class on it if they wanted to!

…or simply get the grades they want. What you do with this skill is up to you.

Outside of tutoring, I studied mechanical engineering at university and spent three years working as a telecoms engineer in the railway industry. So, if you’re interested in how maths and physics connect to the real world, or you’re thinking about a future in STEM, I’m always happy to share insights there too.

If you’re ready to stop memorising and start understanding — whether that’s for your GCSEs, A-levels, or just your own confidence — feel free to get in touch. I’d love to help you.

Mechanical Engineer in the Railway Industry
FirstGroup plc
- A direct application of what is taught in GCSE and A-Level physics and maths.
- Delivered an innovative technology boosting Wi-Fi on trains, and involving many aspects of engineering and maths.

July – Aug 2019
GCSE Science Tutor
NatCen 1-2-1 Mentoring Scheme at UCL
- Weekly one-to-one lessons, guiding and supporting a GCSE science student
- My student began with low confidence in science but I addressed her concerns, made her feel more comfortable, and she began to contribute more in class and break down her barriers, and see an overall improvement in science.

June – July 2019
