Information about Keith

I retired from teaching in the summer of 2012. Before retiring I taught Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in schools in Gloucester ( 13 years ), Norwich ( 2years ) and Ipswich ( 2 years )

My degree is in Mechanical Engineering, I retrained as a teacher in my mid 40`s, prior to this I worked as an engineer in the Nuclear Power industry.

My other interests include cycling, classic cars and tennis.

Prior to retiring I taught Maths ( KS3 ), Physics ( KS3, KS4 and A level ) and Chemistry ( KS3 and KS4 ) at a state school in Gloucester. I alm also an exam marker in Physics and Chemistry ( International GCSE, GCSE and A level ) for three exam boards, and am a Marking Team Leader for one of the boards for GCSE Physics.

Availability: I am double vaccinated and now feel confident enough to resume face to face tutoring. I am currently available pretty much anytime on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening, but if you prefer some other time I may be able to accommodate you.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: At KS3 I have found that fear and lack of confidence is often the main reason students do not meet their potential. I aim to teach in an informal way, identifying strengths and weaknesses and producing an individual plan to build confidence. This often means significant explanation and practice of basic key skills. I prefer to work along with whatever scheme / subject the sudents are currently covering at school. I find that extra work and help in this way improves their performance, ability and confidence in school and so helps improve their attitude and performance generally.

At GCSE and A Level I strongly believe the most effective help begins with working on past paper questions from the relevant syllabus. All exam boards have a " house style ", a valuable skill is to be able to interpret the stem of the questions and then produce an answer which covers the points needed in sufficient detail to gain the marks. This skill can best be gained by working through past paper questions. My past experience, both teaching and as a marker, mean that I have a very good understanding of the GCSE and A level exams and can easily tailor work to the syllabus a student is studying.

Working through past paper questions also rapidly highlights areas of where understanding is weak, allowing me to provide further explanation and examples.
