Information about Jessica

I am a recent graduate at the University of Leeds specializing in Mandarin Chinese and French language with a minor in German. As part of my degree I spent one year living and studying in Beijing at Capital Normal University . During the year I lived with a Chinese family who didn`t speak English at all, allowing me to become fluent. Prior to this I studied Mandarin as a hobby and gained a grade `A` at GCSE. I have also come first in national Mandarin competitions such as the HSBC speaking competition. I was also awarded two scholarships from the Chinese government for coming in the top 15% in a Chinese University.

I also speak French and studied this as a major at University. I spent one semester living and studying in France and once again I lived with a French family. At sixth form I was awarded an Anglo-French scholarship to study in France.

I studied German to A2 and qualified to study German as a minor as part of my degree due to my grades at A level. Whilst studying at University I was awarded a scholarship to study at Freie Universität by the German government during the summer.

I also hold a Masters in Translation studies, so am keen to help students with this aspect of language learning if requested.

I have a real passion for languages and have been very privileged to have had the opportunities to go and live in the countries where these languages are spoken and experience the diverse culture each country has to offer. Teaching is something that I am very passionate about and want to help others have the same opportunities I have been fortunate to have.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to teaching is very relaxed in order to make the learner as confident as possible in a stress-free working environment. I love French, German and Chinese, which is probably why I am so enthusiastic about teaching it to others. I tailor my lessons to the need of the learner and work at the learner`s pace. I am also quite happy to teach in the target language. I encourage students to speak confidently in all my languages, as I myself remember how daunting it can often seem as a learner. I believe that grammar and vocabulary is key when learning a language which is why I teach grammar structures whilst referring back to previously learnt vocabulary in order to build up a data base of new words. Being able to speak another language opens up many opportunities which is why I strive to help my students do the best they can.

Availability: Available at all times

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: I have experience of teaching both Chinese to English speakers and English to Chinese speakers. Whilst living in China I taught conversational travel English to a class of 50 trainee air hostesses. During the final year of my degree I also taught Chinese on a voluntary basis at a secondary school near Leeds. I taught the students beginner`s Chinese and by the end of the year my students were able to hold a conversation, read and write basic Chinese and have an understanding of the Chinese culture.

In summer 2010 I was a language assistant at a French language summer camp. I taught A-level French to British school children preparing for their A-levels. I was required to talk to my students in the target language, teach them key vocabulary, how to form sentence structures and prepare them for their A-levels.

I am a qualified teacher and have taught French, German and Chinese Mandarin to 11-16 year old students, so am very familiar with the national curriculum and examination specifications. In 2011 I also completed a module called `linguists into schools`, where I taught Mandarin in underprivileged schools around Leeds. I also have tutored one to one in the past.

5/5 Rating

Its not normal to find a Mandarin and French tutor who can teach for all levels to a high level. My son is doing both at levels far above GCSE having got A* at GCSE in both and Jessica has been very professional in tutoring him in both languages. I would highly recommend Jessica and am glad (and surprised to have 1 tutor to teach at such a good level in quite different languages) to have found her.
