Information about Alice

My name is Alice and I have a high academic record: 11 A*s at iGCSE and 43 points in the IB. Last year, I graduated from Durham University with an English Literature degree. My particular interests are Old Norse and Victorian Literature and I wrote my dissertation on Thomas Hardy. I was taught by world-leading academics in these fields. I love the depth and breath of my subject;;;; I am excited by individual words and their translation onto the stage and screen. I was very involved in theatre performance at university so will bring an engaging and analytical approach to my tutoring. I have directed shows across the UK.

I am also a keen walker so am always excited to talk about a text in relation to its literary landscape. I recently walked the South Downs Way (the landscape that Thomas Hardy was inspired by!). I love swimming, old films, and going to the theatre. I am currently training on the MFA in Theatre Directing at [contact detail removed].

Experience: In the past, I have tutored mainly online for my tutor, mainly in IB English Literature, at both levels. I also regularly tutor for the Schools Programme, for many subjects including French, History, and Drama. This has been a very rewarding experience, seeing my students improve through essay feedback, regular lessons and homework so that they become more concise, engaged, and creative. This involved particular work with essay structure, poetry analysis, expanding vocabulary, and analysing texts. I also tutor for [contact detail removed]. I have also worked helping children to read at Warden Hill primary school in Cheltenham as well as volunteering at [contact detail removed] with students aged 16 and above.

I understand that every learner requires a different teaching method. In the initial meeting, I would always talk to my student about what method they prefer. Personally, as a student, I often find the scope of what I need to learn terrifying so I like to break things down step by step so it is achievable. I bring this method to my teaching. I have to have a clear work plan from the outset too! I will help my students improve by providing strong foundations before complicating ideas such as teaching literary techniques before reading a poem. I never retain information if it is dictated to me or a boring block of text so I will always make my lessons interactive and energised!

Although I did the IB myself, I am very familiar with A Level texts through my university studies and beyond. I always like learning new information outside of my comfort zone (and appreciating that a student will often know more!)
