Information about Susanne

Throughout the past 2.5 years I have been working at the British School of Paris, where I have been able to build a strong understanding of teaching, including supporting GCSE and A-Level Students in preparation for their German exams as well as running my own German Language Club.

Being a native German speaker, I have recently received my diploma to teach German as a Foreign Language, graduating at the Goethe Institute with a first. Working abroad over the past 17 years, I had the chance to experience first-hand the most important aspects of learning a new language. In addition, I had the opportunity to engage continuously with students in various ways, be it in different educational settings, during my professional photography workshops, as a Teacher Assistant or as a German teaching volunteer.

To be a good teacher, skills from various fields are required. For me it is not sufficient just to be a subject expert, but to also hold core competencies in other areas. One of these is being well organised. Preparing each lesson well, creating a clear path, and following up, are the cornerstones for good teaching, which is something I manifested during my career as a business woman and in my educational career.

Being a lifelong learner is another important trait as it demonstrates the importance of continuous improvement through reflection and taking aboard new perspectives to enhance my teaching style. Having moved to England in 2003 but also having lived in France, Switzerland and Indonesia I can relate to the importance that understanding of other cultures play to gain new and broader viewpoints which enable us to communicate effectively and with confidence.

Learning a language is not just about vocabulary and grammar, it‘s about being curious, keeping an open mind being motivated. I see it as my task to spark this enthusiasm in my students in a creative and engaging way to meet their individual targets by utilizing their unique learning skills.

When teaching my own children and others I always encouraged students to keep an open inquisitive mind, to be passionate about anything they work on and to be caring. I am looking forward to spark the same enthusiasm in my future students too.
