Information about Christopher M
I am an award-winning journalist, a fiction-writer, and professional proofreader and editor. My journalism has been published in the Observer and the Guardian, and I was nominated for the Observer Prize for Arts Journalism 2014.
With a first degree in Linguistics from University College London, I also run a proofreading service for academic essays, papers, and dissertations. I have also acted as an in-house proofreader and editor, most recently for the Westminster thinktank Civitas. I edited a 120,000 book for them with contributions from Members of Parliament and journalists. I am also a part-time postgraduate History researcher at University College London.
Availability: Monday to Saturday, 9AM - 8PM (actual availability will vary due to current pupils).
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I currently tutor English at GCSE, A-level and degree level, presently focusing on improving tutees` understanding of Shakespeare, twentieth-century poetry, and the early development of the novel. I tutor History, mainly to undergraduates, currently focusing on the economic history of the seventeenth century, British imperialism, and wider European historiography.
With a degree in Linguistics, I also teach students the very best ways to construct their essays, express their thoughts coherently and impressively, and engage their readers. It doesn`t just matter what you say: how you say it affects what the marker thinks of the piece of work overall, and how highly they decide to award marks.
I have written on literature, on history, science, and politics, for the Observer, the Guardian, and Index on Censorship, among others. I am a professional academic proofreader, as well as a freelance editor on book-length projects for Westminster think-tanks and publishers.
All of these skills naturally come to bear in teaching and mentoring Creative Writing and Journalism. For these two, I also advise on the best ways to pitch work, as well as which publications and section editors might be most sympathetic.
