Jess

I`m Jess, a fully-qualified languages teacher with more than ten years of teaching and tutoring experience. I provide German, Dutch and English (EFL+ Academic English) language tuition to students of all ages and abilities, taught in a relaxed, fun and friendly way that is tailored to my tutees` needs and interests.

I take great care in planning lessons around my students` individual needs and make sure that lessons help them to progress as quickly as possible. As a language learner myself, I also know how important it is to feel relaxed and comfortable, particularly when it comes to speaking. This is why I place great emphasis on putting my learners at ease, building confidence in speaking and making sure there are plenty of opportunities to practise new language.

A quick summary of my qualifications and background:

I hold a first-class degree in BA German from the University of Exeter, a Master`s degree in Translation Studies and a PGCE in Secondary MFL. As part of my degree, I studied modules in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and spent a year abroad working in Germany as an English language assistant at a German secondary school. After graduating in 2010, I decided to train as a languages teacher at the University of Brighton. After successfully completing my PGCE year, I completed my NQT year at Hove Park School, where I worked as a German, French and Spanish teacher for two years. Since then, I have continued to work as a languages teacher and tutor in Brighton & Hove whilst also studying for a Masters in Translation Studies (specialising in German into English translation) at the University of Portsmouth, which I passed with Distinction in September 2015.

Over the years, I have taught a wonderful variety of students, aged anywhere between two and 75 years of age. I now have two young children of my own, who I hope will share my enthusiasm for learning languages!

Availability: I`ve recently finished my maternity leave, but I am taking on some new students at the moment.

Experience: I have three years` experience as a secondary school languages teacher, primarily teaching GCSE French and German and KS3 German, French and Spanish. I also have experience teaching and tutoring AS and A Level German as part of my teacher training and private tuition and have a sound knowledge of both GCSE and A-Level exam content and requirements.

In addition to working as a secondary school teacher, I`ve also worked as a private language tutor for eight years, teaching German, Dutch, English as a second language (ESL/EFL), academic English and French. I regularly teach English to classes of teenagers and young adults for local providers of educational short stays. I also have plenty of experience teaching German and English to younger children whose first language is not English and who need extra support with the language. Since studying for my Master`s degree, I have also given academic English tuition to university students, providing guidance and support in preparation for essays, presentations and exams as well as offering proofreading services.
