Information about Rachel
I have a PhD from Leeds University in plant cell biochemistry. During my every day, whilst conducting research for my PhD, I taught undergraduate students in biological sciences. I am still immersed in the world of science everyday and constantly updating my knowledge of the subject.
I have a bachelors degree from Newcastle University in Biology (cellular and molecular biology)
My passion for the Biological sciences as well as vast experience in biochemistry make me an enthused tutor which can give students a different view of their subject than they would receive at school.
Although experienced in many teaching styles I am not a qualified teacher and therefore I explain theories in a different way to classroom teachers. This I have found on several occasions as allowed content to `click` with my students where it has not at school. I am able to widen a students knowledge beyond the syllabus, which is important for those students who would like to achieve the highest grades.
In my experience many students during their A-level biology course struggle with the plant biology aspect, I have found that my expertise in this area has really aided students to get to grips with this difficult area which makes up a high proportion of the A-level course content.
At the university of Leeds I held the position of Education outreach fellow, this position requires me to communicate science to school children aswell as the general public. I run workshops and activities which make science easy to understand and interesting to those who usually find science dull. I bring these skills to my tuition sessions, creating a positive environment for learning.
Availability: I am available most weekday evenings and can be flexible with my time to fit in with student needs.
Willing to travel: 3 miles
Experience: I have successfully tutoured a large number students to qualifications in A-level biology with all achieving grades required for admission to the university of their choice. I specialise in enabeling my students to achieve the higher level grades.
I have many other students who have received their GCSE qulifications as well as aiding some students with general science at lower levels.
In addition I have taught undergraduate students at the University of Leeds in the faculty of biological sciences, this involves teaching subjects such as zoology, biology, ecology, genetics and microbiology.
I also have teaching experience in non-academic subjects such as sports and conversational English skills.
