Information about Andros

My subject is Philosophy. What Philosophy promises to you as a student is intellectual empowerment - the ability to judge for yourself both the merits and limitations of political ideologies, ethical standpoints, theories of human nature etc, and to evaluate the arguments put forward in support of them.

I have taught at university level for 35 years. My students found my approach to teaching Philosophy inspiring, because my aim was always to work towards empowering students to develop their own independent thinking.

I have very wide interests in Philosophy, ranging across Epistemology, Ethics, Metaphysics, the Philosophy of Mind and Ancient Greek Philosophy. I am able to offer introductory courses of ten or twelve sessions - for example, on the nature of consciousness, the idea of social justice, and the nature of time. These are effectively at the same level as you would get in the first year of a university degree course. Unlike many other Humanities subjects, such as History or English Literature, which require an A Level in the chosen subject, an A Level in Philosophy is not usually an entry requirement for admission to a Philosophy degree programme.

My engagement with Philosophy includes both the Analytical approach [favoured in the UK, USA and the English-speaking world generally] and the Phenomenological and Existentialist approaches favoured on the continent of Europe, particularly in France and Germany.

Availability: I want to make myself available for online tuition in philosophy, using audio-visual applications such as Skype, and for the whole process to be online with no necessity for actually meeting.

On this basis, I am happy to take students from anywhere in the UK and abroad.

I am most interested in teaching mature students. Prospective students with professional expertise as social workers, lawyers, health professionals, writers etc may wish to enhance their professional experience with the perspective that philosophy is able to provide. For such students I am able to offer individually designed courses, negotiated and agreed with each student on an individual basis.

Having had 35 years teaching at first degree level, I would be happy to offer online help to students who are already on a degree programme, but who feel they need further help. [This would be on the basis of helping the student, not doing the work for them].

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have thirty-five years of teaching experience in a university setting. I have taught at undergraduate degree level and postgraduate, including PhD. I was the Course Leader at the university I have retired from, and was responsible for the planning, design and validation of the Philosophy programme.
