Information about Oscar

I have recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with First Class honours in my BA Linguistics degree. Prior to this I attended Whitgift Boys` School where I achieved straight A* grades across all subjects at both GCSE and A levels, as well as taking on additional qualifications in both Spanish and Mathematics. Enthusiastic, sympathetic, and above all hard-working, I am capable of motivating others to progress significantly in their target subject and achieve top results. Away from academics, I also pride myself on being a well-rounded individual, with co-curricular interests lying predominantly in sports and music, as well as strong interpersonal skills, friendly and adaptable to all social scenarios. Please feel free to get in touch regarding enquiries or any further questions!

Experience: General: Throughout both my schooling and university experience, I have demonstrated an ability to fully master the course content, covering all necessary components, and often going above and beyond the base curriculum to ensure I achieve the top results. Having only recently graduated, I am also still well-versed in the many intricacies of the examination process, equipped with a variety of tips and advice on how to best prepare for this process and ensure the best possible performance when it comes down to sitting the exam. I believe that, through the transferral of these all-important skills, I am capable of aiding the student in unlocking their full potential and achieving the grades they desire in the given subject.

Spanish: Despite being an English native, I have been learning Spanish since the age of 4 all the way up to A-level standard, and have thus reached a near-native level of proficiency. Having excelled early on at secondary school, I was fast-tracked into the advanced Spanish group (along with Spanish natives) and took the GCSE a year early, achieving an A* with full UMS. The following year I sat the `DELE B1` Additional Spanish Qualification, achieving a `PASS` with 98.3%, the highest in my class. At A-level I then went on to attain an A* grade with full UMS, and was awarded with the Spanish Prize for my school as a result. I have also received a wide-ranged exposure to Spanish outside of the classroom environment, with school exchanges to cities such as Zaragoza, Granada and Valencia, as well as cultural excursions to Barcelona, Madrid and Seville. These experiences have allowed me to immerse myself in the language and further improve my skills and fluency. Finally, through studying Linguistics at university, I am well aware of the many intricacies of the language learning process; the areas of language which may be particularly difficult to grasp at first; and the best ways to ensure the student becomes fully comfortable with the non-native tongue, able to acquire complex concepts effectively and efficiently. In my lessons you will develop your grammatical knowledge, vocabulary, reading/writing, listening, speaking and translation skills, as well as learn key tips for the examination process.

Mathematics: Fast-tracked into the advanced group during my early years at secondary school, I was able to take my Mathematics GCSE a year early, achieving a very high A* result. The following year I took the `Additional Mathematics` FSMQ (Free Standing Mathematics Qualification), once more attaining an A* result and furthering my comfort with the more complex mathematical concepts. At A-level I achieved a high A* grade, falling just a few marks short of a full UMS score. With this, I have developed a fundamental understanding of the many intricacies of Mathematics, not only able to perform accurate calculations, but also able to logically reason why this is the case, explaining clearly the path taken to get to the final solution. I believe this quality is fundamental in the teaching of Maths, where often certain concepts can be difficult to conceptualise and understand fully; but with my transparent and step-by-step logical reasoning, I aim to encourage students to do exactly this, leading to long-term success when it comes to sitting the examinations.

Linguistics: I have recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with First Class honours in my BA Linguistics degree. In my first and second years at university I also achieved high First Class results, finishing top of the year in both. Over the duration of the three year course I specialised in the fields of Phonetics, Syntax, Psycholinguistics, Language Acquisition, Historical Linguistics, Computational Linguistics and Linguistic Theory, but I am also well-versed in a wide number of additional linguistic disciplines. I not only offer tuition regarding the understanding of course content and beyond, but can also help with the development of linguistics personal statements for university applications, interview practice and tips, as well as dissertation help. For those who are perhaps thinking of studying Linguistics at university, but would first like to find out in more depth what it entails, I also offer informational courses where we can cover the key concepts and look into the sorts of things you would be studying in more detail at university.

Personal Statements: For those at the stage of applying to university, particularly those looking to study at Oxbridge, I offer help with constructing an effective and memorable personal statement. Using my years of experience as a student at the University of Cambridge, I am now well-aware of the sorts of unique and intriguing components you should try to include to catch the eye of the admissions office and make your stand out from the rest, as well as how to best structure a cover to letter to make the most of the limited space available.
