Information about Jake

I am a UCL Genetics student who has extensive experience offering A Level Biology tuition via Zoom. As well as tutoring students privately, I also volunteer as a tutor for a company called Tutor The Nation. I am also able to offer lessons in GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Maths/Additional Maths.

I am happy to offer the first session at a discount. I receive excellent feedback from my tutees and very often they go on to achieve excellent results in exams. I believe the key to being a successful tutor is patience and acknowledging the fact that all students learn at a different pace and have different starting points. I am happy to cater to all abilities/starting points.

I am familiar with all exam boards and have the most experience teaching AQA and Edexcel specifications. The majority of my sessions follow the same basic structure:
- Introducing the aims of the session, which are always closely focussed on the requirements of the syllabus.
- A recap activity to revisit what has been covered in previous sessions and/or other topics on the syllabus. This can be tailored to the ability of the student and usually takes the form of a number of discussion questions. My students all find these to be extremely helpful.
- The session main content. This can be set at the pace required by the student and I will usually repeat the same point more than once to ensure the student understands. I try to use questioning where possible to break up the information and keep students engaged. I am always happy to reexplain concepts if students struggle to understand the first time, and my students often find that they do not have to take notes because I send them detailed PowerPoint slides at the end of the session. This approach allows them to better concentrate on what I am saying.
- We may conclude the session with past paper questions relevant to what has just been discussed, and/or we may revisit the aims to ensure that they have been met. The student can then choose what topic they would like to cover in the next session.
- I often set an optional task such as past paper questions or extra practice for outside the session. If the student chooses to complete this, I will grade the task and provide detailed written feedback outside of the session free of charge.
I am always open to changing the structure of sessions based on the needs and feedback of the individual student, but I have found that the above approach is very popular with students.
