Dr Michelle , B.Sc.(Hons.), Ph.D., P.G.Cert.H.E., F.H.E.A.
Professional specialist science tutor and academic mentor

I am a full time, highly qualified and experienced professional specialist science tutor and academic mentor. With my strong educational background and dedication to tutoring, I provide comprehensive support to students in biology, chemistry, and physics at all levels.

I hold a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, and a postgraduate qualification in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (P.G.Cert.H.E.) from the University of Sheffield. With my expertise and in-depth knowledge of all mainstream science curriculums and entrance exams, I am well-equipped to guide students towards their academic goals.

I have a deep passion for science and a strong academic background. My goal is to empower students with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and enthusiasm necessary to excel in their academic pursuits.

As a specialist in working with students aiming for top independent schools and universities, I understand the rigorous demands and expectations placed upon them. I provide targeted support, helping them master complex concepts, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and achieve exceptional academic results. With my guidance, students gain the confidence and competitive edge needed to succeed in their school admissions and beyond.

I have extensive experience working with neurodiverse students who face barriers to learning. I currently teach science in specialist Autistic schools for the National Autistic Society. I employ customised teaching strategies, individualised pacing, and a nurturing approach to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. By adapting to their unique learning styles, I help students overcome challenges, build self-esteem, and reach their full potential.

I have a patient and empathetic approach, tailored to meet each student`s specific needs and learning goals. I foster a positive and engaging atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring concepts, and developing a deep understanding of the subject matter.

If you are a student aspiring to secure a place at a top independent school or a neurodiverse learner seeking dedicated support and mentoring, I am here to guide you on your educational journey. Let`s work together to overcome obstacles, achieve outstanding results, and unlock your true potential.

Availability: I offer flexible scheduling options and provide intensive tuition for students who require immediate improvements or face impending deadlines. Over the years, I have successfully helped numerous individuals prepare for entrance exams, GCSEs, and A-levels. Additionally, I can assist with undergraduate applications and interview techniques. Experience: With 18 years of experience, I have been teaching and leading science curricula at the university level. Currently, I work as a specialist science tutor at the National Autistic School, where I provide personalized one-to-one tuition to autistic students with pathological demand avoidance. This experience has honed my ability to break down barriers for learners with special educational needs, ensuring their success and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Previous roles include: Head of Science and Academic Partnerships at LIC University of Leeds, Head of research, lecturer, science curriculum lead and developer.

I am passionate about breaking down barriers to learning and improving student outcomes for all. I am a committee member of the Special Educational Needs, Disability and Mental Health Working Group. I am committed to research-led education and actively engage in research collaborations. Currently, I am involved in a research collaboration with the University of Leeds, investigating international students` outcomes and motivations globally. This dedication to research ensures that I stay at the forefront of educational practices and continuously enhance my teaching methodologies.

My current and recent tutees include A- level students attending both private and state schools, international students and students with anxiety and special educational needs.

Approach

My approach is to work alongside learners with the aim of facilitating them to discover and develop their own most suitable strategies and techniques for achieving their goals. These goals can be very diverse: to feel more confident, to boost grades, to improve academic skills, to pass specific exams, to gain entry to Universities, to write better reports, or to master specific subjects or areas.

I am very down-to-earth, friendly, open, and approachable. I always take into account the learner`s age, experience, starting-level and needs. I am very hard-working and adaptable in finding new and appropriate ways to get the required results for each individual.
Tailoring the sessions to each student is necessary to create an environment where students can enjoy the subject they may once have been struggling with. Developing confidence and enthusiasm in a subject makes a profound difference in academic performance.

In addition to science tuition, I provide assistance with writing university reports and dissertations, proofreading, and mentoring. I offer comprehensive support to students throughout their academic journey.

I have a current and up to date DBS.

Michelle is an excellent teacher. She is warm and welcoming, but very knowledgeable. Her teaching style builds confidence and she paces lessons with enough informal chat to break up the intense teaching to enable the work to sink in. My daughter’s confidence with her Chemistry has greatly improved.
