Information about Aleix

Hi, my name is Aleix and I am a highly qualified, experienced and fun tutor of English and Spanish.

I`m a recent and published PhD graduate (2020) holding degrees in English (MSc, BA Hons) and Spanish (BA Hons, Native speaker) from the University of Edinburgh and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Both my two undergraduate degrees and my masters were awarded to me with Distinctions. I have been tutoring in universities, schools and privately for near a decade, as you can see from my experience below. In this time I have successfully helped all kinds of students achieve their goals. From primary pupils who struggled with literacy to adult learners and undergraduates seeking to complete their degrees. In recent years, I have specialised in helping students prepare for and succeed in their National 4, National 5, Highers and Advance Highers exams.

I have a real vocation for teaching and am a firm believer in the strengths of personalised tuition. My teaching method is fully adaptable to the needs and goals of each student. I invariably strive, however, to strike the right balance between demanding teaching which seeks the best possible performance and a friendly, inclusive and encouraging style which will make this pursual not just rewarding but also engaging, fun, and helpful for the student to build confidence on the given subject.

As a modern and young tutor, I also use a variety of media to enhance my teaching. I often draw on audiovisual materials, like films, video clips or music, to enhance understanding of specific study areas. I use importantly, too, real-time editable online documents which prove pre-eminently useful when it comes to proofreading and editing work that needs to be delivered quickly.

Availability: Mondays and Wednesdays after 4pm.

Weekends

COVID-19 NOTE: Due to the current crisis, all my tuition has temporarily moved online. I am available through Skype, Zoom, Hangouts, Jitsi, and a variety of online collaborative whiteboard software.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: As mentioned above, I have been tutoring privately for near a decade. In this time I have helped students from virtually all levels and backgrounds attain their goals in literacy, preparing for their National, Highers and Advance Highers exams or equivalents, or getting through their English and Spanish undergraduate degrees. In addition to this, I have experience teaching in a vast variety of settings, subjects, levels and institutions. A Few of my previous teaching posts include:

-Teaching Assistant at the University of Glasgow and University of Stirling: I have taught courses at both pre-honours and honours level on genre, linguistics, the novel, and 20th century literature. I have supervised and marked dozens of essays, exams, creative writing exercises and dissertations.

-Co-founder of Yakety Yak Language Café Glasgow: I have set up, developed, and taught Spanish in this Glasgow-based innovative language café. Yakety Yak approaches language teaching through an original and highly effective focus on practice and conversation, a method that I often bring to my private tutoring.

-Teaching Assistant at Hutcheson`s Grammar School: I have taught Spanish grammar and conversation to various Advanced Higher, Higher and S4 groups. In this post I also helped develop materials (activities, lesson plans, presentations) and correct written assignments and exams.

-Speech Therapist Assistant: I worked as a personal tutor of children and teenagers of various ages (6 to 20) with learning or developmental disorders (dyslexia, Aspergers) in collaboration with a speech therapist. My tutoring in this area has focused on developing comprehension and organisational skills as well as study methods effective for children that find the learning of specific subject difficult.

-Tutor at Lingo Flamingo: I have taught Spanish in care homes around Scotland to people with initial stages of dementia. Besides delivering the sessions, in this post I have helped develop adequate materials, lesson plans, and techniques to teach languages to people with extreme difficulties.
