Information about Leila

I am a medical student at Imperial College London, where I am currently based. I achieved A*A*A in A levels Biology (new 2017 linear), Chemistry (new 2017 linear), and Mathematics (modular) and would love to help others to achieve high grades. I achieved the highest score out of a cohort of 250 students at Biology AS level, and the examination essay I wrote in the A level exam was chosen to be sent back to my college to show as an A* example to future students. I have taught over 150 GCSE and A level lessons online, including in schools under the pupil premium scheme. I also offer online teaching via Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

When tutoring students I believe that it is important to concentrate on understanding the underlying concepts of each topic, rather than focusing on rote learning. In my experience, many students focus on rote learning at GCSE, which can cause them to struggle when it comes to A levels and university.

What I can help with:
GCSE and A level sessions in Biology, Chemistry and Science
Medical School Admissions Tutoring:
I received 3 offers for medicine out of the 4 medical schools I applied for. I will offer sessions to provide comprehensive application advice including which medical schools are going to give you the best chance of being invited to interview, and advice on how to write the best personal statement. I will also be offering medical school interview preparation and practice.

About my sessions

First and foremost I believe it is important to ask students which areas they are least confident in. Do they struggle with experiments? Data analysis? Understanding concepts? Memorisation? I will then ask them the topics they struggle most with and make note of this in order to personalise and tailor the lessons to each student. I will then be able to focus the most on these topics, making effective use of their tuition time.

During lessons, I will often start by explaining theory and concepts to the students using visual aids and the online learning space. Next, I will test what they have understood and clarify weaknesses using both simple questions and then past exam questions. I will then go through the mark scheme with them and explain the answers. I will log the marks they got in the exam questions and note down any sub-topics they struggled with. In the next session, I will then ask them a few quick questions on these specific sub-topics to test that their understanding has improved before moving on to the next topic.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: A levels: Biology, Chemistry, Maths A*A*A
AS levels: Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics AAAA

My teaching journey started at college, where I was a reading mentor to primary school children, and have taken part in education schemes teaching children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol throughout different primary schools. I have also volunteered in a special needs group and have had lots of experience communicating young people aged between 13 and 18.

I have a passion for biology and chemistry and have been tutoring GCSE and A level students online for 2 years on a site called MyTutor. I have over 150 hours of tutoring experience and I am competent in teaching all levels up to A level standard.
Being part of the first academic year to complete the new linear A levels gives me first-hand experience, meaning I will be able to transfer the main and most important skills I have learnt straight to new students.
